GOLDEN, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped a pair of tightly-contested games Saturday afternoon in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pod in Golden, Colorado.
The Yellow Jackets fell 7-5 to Adams State and 3-0 to the host, Colorado Mines. The losses snap the Yellow Jackets four-game win streak and drops the overall record to 4-11 and 4-6 in the RMAC.
Alex Wiley connected on two hits, including a home run, with three RBI on the afternoon while Katelyn Odle went 2-for-3 in the first game of the day.
Game One: Adams State 7 Black Hills State 5
The Yellow Jackets tallied six hits and came back from a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the third inning when
Alex Wiley crushed a home run into right center field, scoring Odle and
Pamela Sakuma. Sakuma reached base on a single through the left side and Odle reached base on a bunt.
After the Grizzlies broke the 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of unearned runs, the Yellow Jackets scored a run in the bottom half thanks to a Claire Fergusson triple. Following her triple, she scampered home on a wild pitch.
Adams State again scored two runs in the next inning, where they took a 7-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth when Erica Everson doubled home Odle.
However, the Yellow Jackets couldn't get back on the scoreboard in the final frame, falling 7-5.
Carlee Beck pitched five innings, giving up nine hits and four earned runs. Kacee Schroeder picked up the win for Adams State, pitching 4.2 innings and giving up four runs but struck out eight.
Game Two: Colorado Mines 3 Black Hills State 0
The Yellow Jackets tallied three hits against Hallie Smith but had plenty of chances, collecting five walks.
One of those chances was in the first inning when Wiley doubled into right center and Claire Fergusson drew a walk. The duo had a double steal to place runners on second and third but the Yellow Jackets were unable to convert into any runs.
The first run of the game in the bottom of the third when the Orediggers strung together a couple of hits to score Boston Ludlow, who was standing at third base.
The other two runs came in the bottom of the sixth for the Orediggers on a pair of hits and utilizing a Yellow Jackets error.
Stefanie Witman pitched the complete game for the Yellow Jackets, giving up just a hit an inning and one earned run, but was charged with the loss to fall to 1-5 on the season. Smith, her counterpart in the circle, improves to 5-4 on the season, in her complete game.
