Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – A hot-shooting Adams State University men's basketball downed the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets 75-58 in the Young Center Friday night.
The Grizzlies (10-11, 9-7 RMAC) shot 59.6 percent from the field for the game and hit 13-of-22 shots from 3-point range. However the game was not so sure until the final minutes as the Yellow Jackets made a push in the second half.
Down 41-22 with 17:21 remaining in the game, Black Hills State (9-11, 7-9 RMAC) went on an 11-0 run to pull the deficit to just eight points with 14:05 remaining in the game.
The run began on a layup from Nick Ongarato, who scored a team-high 15 points. The run continued with a power shot in the paint from Max Mueller.
Joe Cameron, who came off the bench for nine points in 12 minutes, then swished a trey from the corner with 16 minutes left on the clock.
Wyatt Krogman then scored on a layup, to pull within 10 points at 41-31 and the run concluded on a tip-in basket from Fraser Malcolm.
The Grizzlies froze the run when Shakir Smith answered with a 3-point basket of his own for the 44-33 ASU lead. After Adams State rebuilt its lead to 14 points, the Yellow jackets again went on a run, this time a mini 5-0 streak, beginning with a jumper from Mueller.
Sam Mayer then hit a jumper, thanks to one of Tate Hilgenkamp's career-best eight assists. Nick Ongarato hit one-of-two free throws with 11:27 on the clock to make the score 47-38. However that was the closest the Yellow Jackets would get as ASU pulled away in the remaining minutes for the 75-58 final score.
After Ongarato's 15 points, Mueller added 12 points and seven rebounds for Black Hills State. Smith scored a game-high 25 points behind seven-made 3-point baskets for Adams State.
The Yellow Jackets continue its four-game homestand Saturday with a 6 p.m. tipoff against No. 15 Fort Lewis.
