COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Black Hills State Softball team played a tripleheader Sunday at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Green and Gold fell in the three-game set by scores of 11-9, 10-2 and 7-2.
Black Hills State falls to 6-18 overall and 6-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UCCS improves to 14-10 overall and 11-8 in the conference loop.
The two squads moved into a tripleheader after Saturday's action was wiped out, first due to snow followed by cold temperatures by time the playing field was playable.
Game One: UCCS 11 Black Hills State 9
The Yellow Jackets tallied nine runs on 10 hits but the Mountain Lions used a six-run fifth inning and a three-run seventh inning to walk-off the Green and Gold.
In the top of the first, with two runners on, Erica Everson connected on her first home run of the season to give the Yellow Jackets the early 3-0 lead. After UCCS scored a run in the bottom of the first, BHSU scored two more runs in the second.
Katie Campo, who became Black Hills State's all-time leader in at-bats on Sunday, doubled into right field scoring Claire Fergusson and Alex Wiley.
The Mountain Lions scored their second run of the game in the third inning as the Yellow Jackets entered the fourth leading 5-2. Black Hills State then scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning. The first run came on a Morgan Smith single, scoring Jo-Jo Curry. Smith then scored on a Wiley infield single.
The Yellow Jackets doubled their inning output when Kelsea Nash singled scoring Wiley and Fergusson for the commanding 9-2 lead.
However a bottom of the fifth inning saw UCCS push six runs across the plate to fall behind by just one run at 9-8.
After a scoreless sixth inning and top of the seventh, Kylie Barnard hit a three-run home run to give the home squad an 11-9 walkoff victory.
In the game, Wiley, Everson and Campo each collected two hits while Wiley and Fergusson each scored three runs apiece while Everson hit a game-high three RBI. Alex Wiley was charged with the loss after Carlee Beck started the game, pitching four innings.
Game Two: UCCS 10 Black Hills State 2
After UCCS took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Black Hills State tallied two runs in the top of the third inning after Everson singled up the middle scoring Wiley and Smith. The Mountain Lions answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 3-2 lead, then used a six-run fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead. A run in the fifth took the score to 10-2.
Black Hills State tallied seven hits but couldn't place them to score runners, as Wiley tallied two hits. The Yellow Jackets struck out just once in the game.
Stefanie Witman picked up the loss after pitching 4.2 innings and striking out four.
Game Three: UCCS 7 Black Hills State 2
After three innings of scoreless ball, UCCS broke the 0-0 game with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead against the Yellow Jackets.
Black Hills State put two runs across the plate thanks to a Lauren Lesniak home run in the top of the seventh with Curry on base. Curry pinch ran for Nash, who got on base thanks to a single up the middle. That set up Lesniak for the home run into left field.
Black Hills State tallied six hits in the game, led by Lesniak and Fergusson with two each. Curry, who pitched in relief last week against Fort Lewis, started her first career game, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. She also struck out five.
