LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Black Hills State University softball team was back in action Saturday after its previous series last weekend was snowed out. The Yellow Jackets traveled to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to face New Mexico Highlands, falling 6-1 and 2-0 in the first two games of the series.
Game One: New Mexico Highlands 6 Black Hills State 1
The Yellow Jackets struggled to get moving offensively, collecting four hits over the seven innings. The Cowgirls scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning then piled on four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets lone run came when Claire Fergusson singled and promptly stole second base. She then scored when Alex Wiley reached base on an error.
Wiley had two of the four hits while Fergusson and Morgan Smith picked up the other two. Carlee Beck started the game in the circle, giving up four runs over five innings as her record drops to 1-6. Michelle Brincefield collected the win for NMHU, striking out five Yellow Jackets.
Game Two: New Mexico Highlands 2 Black Hills State 0
Wiley again led the Yellow Jackets with two hits, this time collecting two of the three for the Green and Gold. Katie Campo had the other hit as the Cowgirls scored in the fifth and sixth innings for the 2-0 victory.
Stefanie Witman drew the loss for the Yellow Jackets, giving up just an earned run in six innings and striking out three. She lowered her season ERA to 3.60 in the game. Madison Davis was the pitcher of record for NMHU, improving to 4-8 after giving up three hits and striking out five.
The Yellow Jackets and Cowgirls complete the series Sunday with an 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. start for the doubleheader.
