LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Black Hills State University softball team completed its four-game set with New Mexico Highlands on Sunday in Las Vegas, New Mexico, falling 9-2 and 13-0.
Alex Wiley continued her hot-hitting weekend, collecting three hits on the day along with a walk, RBI and a stolen base.
Game One: New Mexico Highlands 9 Black Hills State 2
Black Hills State collected five hits in the contest and put its two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning. Down 4-0, Morgan Smith reached base on a bunt and promptly stole second base. She then scored when the Highlands shortstop committed an error on Claire Fergusson's at-bat, allowing Fergusson to reach base.
With Wiley at-bat, Fergusson stole second and third base then scored when Wiley singled into centerfield as the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit in half at 4-2.
However, the home Cowgirls put five runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, which led to the 9-2 final score.
Carlee Beck was charged with the loss after giving up 14 hits and striking out two. Brianna Velasquez picked up the victory for NMHU with the complete-game five-hitter.
Game Two: New Mexico Highlands 13 Black Hills State 0 (5 innings)
The Yellow Jackets struggled in the field during game two, charged with four errors while collecting three hits.
The hits came off the bats of Wiley, Katie Campo and Erica Everson. Stefanie Withman was the starter while Alex Menke and Wiley pitched in relief.
Madison Duke picked up the win in the circle for NMHU.
The Yellow Jackets return to Spearfish for the first time in nearly a month as they host region rival Chadron State on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's first pitch is slated for noon while Sunday has an 11 a.m. start.
