SPEARFISH, S.D. – Former Black Hills State University national champion thrower Aubrey Baxter is set to take a shot at qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 2009 graduate has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials beginning July 1. Her turn in the hammer throw will come on Wednesday, July 6, at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Baxter qualified for the hammer throw with a toss of 68.33 meters (224 feet and 2 inches), a distance she achieved at the Sioux City Relays as an unattached athlete. She enters the Olympic trials with the 13th-best throw
This is her third-go at the Olympic trials, having competed as a student at BHSU in 2008 and again in 2012. Her highest ranking came in 2012 when she ranked No. 5 in the nation and No. 24 in the world.
Baxter, a native of Redfield, South Dakota, is an eight-time NAIA National Champion during her career at Black Hills State and still holds the NAIA national record in both the weight throw and hammer throw. She also earned 11 All-America accolades during her time at BHSU.
She currently competes for Team Nebraska while living in Omaha, Nebraska.
The top-three competitors earn a spot on the United States Olympic Team at the Rio Games held from August 5-21.
