ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team had a game-winning basket rim out in a 75-73 loss at Adams State Saturday night in Alamosa, Colorado.
Down seven points with 3:27 remaining in the game, the Yellow Jackets attempted to mount a comeback when Fraser Malcom hit a jumper followed by a layup with his back to the basket to bring the Green and Gold within three points at 72-69.
When
Max Mueller secured a defensive rebound, he was fouled and hit one-of-two free throws to make the game one possession with just over a minute remaining.
After Brandon Sly sank a pair of free throws for ASU, Mueller grabbed an offensive rebound and quickly hit the put-back basket to stay at one possession and pushed within one point when Mueller hit another free throw with 10 seconds on the clock with a 74-73 Adams State lead.
With time winding down, BHSU quickly fouled Bryan Umoru who hit one-of-two free throws to set up the final possession of the game.
Zach McLemore quickly drove to the basket and got airborne in a crowded lane, where he zipped a pass to Malcolm in the left corner who put up the potential game-winning basket as time expired, but saw the ball hit the rim and fall out.
Black Hills State led just once in the game, in the opening minutes and a 5-4 score but never trailed by more than 12 points while playing the majority of the second half within six points and never down more than eight points.
In the second half, McLemore hit a 3-point basket with 11:13 remaining which pushed him over 1,000 points in his college career as the junior transfer scored 787 points in two years at Colorado Christian and has now totaled 219 points in his first year at Black Hills State. The junior from Tallahassee, Florida, has now totaled 1,006 post high school points.
Malcolm scored a team-high 16 points as five Yellow Jackets tallied double digit scoring. McLemore had 14 points while
Jonas Anderson,
Connor O'Hearn and Mueller each totaled 10 points. Mueller nearly had a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds. O'Hearn added four assists in arguably his best game of his young career.
Brandon Sly scored a game-high 26 points for Adams State as the Grizzlies improve to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets slip to 5-13, 2-10.
Black Hills State continues its road warrior status playing its third-straight game away from the Young Center on Tuesday. However Tuesday's contest is just a short drive to Rapid City to face rival South Dakota Mines in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. Tickets are being presold at the Young Center Front Desk, or available at the door Tuesday.
