WSOC: Nielson's Lone Goal Not Enough, as Orediggers Defeat BHSU, 4-1

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Katie Nielson's lone goal was not enough, as the Black Hills State University women's soccer team fell to the No. 18 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, 4-1.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 0-14 on the season and 0-9 in conference action, while Colorado Mines improves to 11-2-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference.

In the first half, No. 18 Orediggers got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Haley Cole took an open shot from a sharp angle and hit the upper far left corner.

It was not long though, before the Yellow Jackets answered back in the 20th minute. Katie Nielson chipped a shot in over the goalkeeper, after receiving the ball at the top of the box. Nielson's goal tied it up, 1-1.

After the intermission, the Orediggers came out hot with Brooke Stoermer scoring a goal in the 53rd minute to take a 2-1 lead over the Yellow Jackets. Stoermer received a pass from Haley Cole at the top of box, and placed it in the upper right corner of the net.

The Orediggers momentum continued, as Taylor McRae netted a header off a corner to give the Orediggers an insurance goal and lead the Yellow Jackets, 3-1. Theresa Osborne scored her first season goal to end it for Colorado Mines, 4-1.

"I'm really proud of our effort tonight," said head coach Mike Greco. "This will be a focal point we look back on as we progress toward our goals."

Black Hills State was out shot 40 to one, but the one goal and shot landed in net to keep the Yellow Jackets from being shut out. Nielson tallied the one shot and goal for the Green and Gold.

Raven Johnson faced 40 shots, grabbing nine saves in net for BHSU.

Black Hills State returns to action on Sunday, October 22, to host Colorado Christian in a 1 p.m. matchup.
