GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell, 3-0, to the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Friday night.
The sets went as follows: 25-21, 25-21, and 25-19.
Black Hills State falls to 8-12 on the season, and 5-6 in conference, while the Mavericks improve to 13-6 overall, and 7-4 in conference play.
In set one, the two teams traded off points until 18-all. An error by the Yellow Jackets gave the Mavericks the go-ahead point at 19-18, causing BHSU to take a timeout. The lead for Colorado Mesa increased at 20-18, with another error by the Green and Gold.
Laurel Lech scored a point closing the gap to one, at 20-19.
At 21-20, the Mavericks scored three points in a row to lead BHSU, 24-20. The Yellow Jackets threatened a comeback, as
Kenzie Kazmer scored a point to bring the Green and Gold to 24-21. It was not enough though, as Colorado Mesa ended the set 25-21, and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the two teams traded off points until 8-all. The Yellow Jackets trailed until they tied it again at 13-all. From there, the two teams once again traded off points until 17-all, when a kill by Mackenzie Edwards gave the Mavericks the momentum they needed to win the set at 25-21, and lead the match, 2-0.
In the third set, the Yellow Jackets grabbed a six-point lead at 11-5 before allowing the Mavericks to go on a 5-0 run and trail within one at 11-10. Taylor Woods of the Mavericks tied it up at 11-all with a service ace. From there, the two teams traded off points until 15-all, when CMU took the lead and kept it to close out the set, 25-19, and win the match, 3-0.
Kenzie Kazmer was on fire for the Yellow Jacket offense tallying 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
Laurel Lech assisted Kazmer notching 25 assists.
On defense,
Sydney Ederhoff registered 14 digs while
Cheyenne Palu blocked five shots.
The Green and Gold head to Gunnison, Colorado, to take on Western State, Saturday night with first serve set for 7 p.m.
