SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell in four sets to Chadron State on Saturday night by a score of 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets took set two, while the Eagles claimed sets one, three, and four. The sets went as follows: 25-18, 25-23, 25-16, and 25-19.
Black Hills State and Chadron are now tied in eighth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 10-15 overall record, and 7-9 conference record.
After trailing 1-0 in the match, the Yellow Jackets found their momentum in set two. The Green and Gold got out to a three-point lead at 4-1. The Eagles' Gaby Varela smashed two kills down to bring the score within one at 4-3.
Later on in the set, Black Hills State increased its lead to 18-13, but the Eagles tried to close in again. At 19-17, the Yellow Jackets were forced to take a timeout after three consecutive kills by Dominika Senkerikova.
Following the timeout,
Carisa Becerra smashed one down to increase the lead back up to three at 20-17. From there, the Eagles came back within one towards the end of the set at 24-23, threatening to take a 2-0 lead in the match, until
Kenzie Kazmer hit the set point at 25-23, and tied the match, 1-1.
In the third set, the Eagles got off to a quick 9-2 lead, and managed to keep the distance to take the set, 25-16, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set, the two teams traded off points until 14-12. From there, Chadron kept the lead and closed out the set and match at 25-19 and 3-1, respectively.
Laurel Lech tallied her second double-double of the weekend with 40 assists and 15 digs.
Carisa Becerra notched her first season-high 10 kills.
Ellise Lech worked alongside Becerra and registered 10 kills as well.
On defense,
Sydney Ederhoff recorded 21 digs alongside L. Lech.
Fehrin Ward blocked six shots, while Becerra and
Cheyenne Palu each had five. The team blocked 11 total.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, November 7, to host its final home game of the season against South Dakota Mines, with first serve at 7 p.m.
