CHADRON, Neb. – A double double by
Fraser Malcolm helped carry the Black Hills State University men's basketball team to victory over the Chadron State Eagles Friday night, 63-43. Malcolm registered 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the tip as Malcolm scored the first points for the Yellow Jackets to go up 2-0 on the Eagles. Darius Polley answered back taking a shot from beyond the arc to give the Eagles a one-point lead 3-2. From there, Malcolm hit a jumper in the paint to give the lead back to BHSU at 4-3. Polley once again gave the lead back to the Eagles at 5-4 with a layup in the paint.
With 16:42 remaining in the first half,
Connor O'Hearn started a run for the Yellow Jackets making a shot from the top of the key.
Sam McCloud followed behind O'Hearn two minutes later making a layup in the paint to increase the lead by three at 8-5.
Halfway through the first half,
LD Thomas flung a pass over to
Max Mueller at the top of the arc to drain it in to give the Yellow Jackets a 12 point lead over the Eagles at 18-6. Chadron tried to find momentum and close in on the Green and Gold lead as Vonsinh Sayaloune started a 9-0 run by sinking a shot from beyond the arc to cut the lead to nine at 18-9. Leigh Saffin and Jordan Perry each sank a shot from downtown to bring the score within three at 18-15.
Antonio Capley drove through the lane to score in the paint to end the Eagles run and increased the Yellow Jacket lead back up to five at 20-15. Matt Reader was sent to the line as he made both shots to trail by three once again at 20-17. That did not stop the Yellow Jackets though as
Jonas Anderson hit a trey to give BHSU the momentum to close out the first half at 26-20.
A free throw by Malcolm set the pace for the Green and Gold to start the second half. At 15:33, The Yellow Jackets held a 10-point lead over the Eagles at 33-23.
In the final six minutes, BHSU went on an 11-0 run starting at 5:44 with Thomas draining a three pointer to give the Green and Gold a 48-36 lead. O'Hearn then followed up behind Thomas making 3-of-4 from the line to increase the lead to 51-36.
With 4:24 remaining, Malcolm was sent to the line where he made 2-of-2 to continue the Yellow Jacket run and grow the score to 53-36. McCloud and Thomas each made a layup in the paint to give the Green and Gold a 57-36 lead over the Eagles. That 11-0 run set the pace for BHSU to claim the victory at 63-43.
Black Hills State went 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from beyond the arc, and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the line.
Malcolm went 4-of-10 from the field, 1-of-3 from downtown and 6-of-8 from the line in 33 minutes of action. Alongside Malcolm,
Zach McLemore scored 10 points for the Yellow Jacket offense.
Hoyt Nicholas helped Malcolm on defense grabbing 11 rebounds as well while O'Hearn grabbed seven.
Black Hills State ends its season on the road at Regis on Saturday, February 25 with tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m.
