WBB: Scott's Double Double Comes Up Short in Loss

CHADRON, Neb. – A double double by Kassidy Scott was not enough as the Black Hills State University women's basketball fell in a nail biter overtime contest to the Chadron State Eagles, 67-60. Scott scored 14 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds on the night.

In the first quarter, the Eagles scored the first two points by Kalli Feddersen at the line. Rachel Erickson turned around and scored the first two points for the Yellow Jackets from the line to tie the game up at 2-2. From there, Chadron State jumped out to a 10-point lead going on a 10-0 run to lead the Green and Gold 12-2 with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter.

At 2:36, Cheyanne Balster ended the Eagles run by grabbing her own rebound off a missed a shot and laying it back up into the net to trail by eight at 12-4. Erickson cut in more on the lead making two more shots from the line to trail 12-6. Kylah Collins responded to the Yellow Jackets driving to the net to lay it in and increase the lead 14-6. A last minute three pointer at the end of the first quarter by Taylor Trohkimoinen brought the Yellow Jackets within seven at 16-9.

The Green and Gold's momentum continued at the start of the second quarter as Scott made 1-of-2 from the line to bring the score within six. Erickson followed up behind Scott with a long ball from downtown to cut the Eagles lead to three at 16-13.

Chadron State tried to increase its lead over BHSU with Maddie Metzger taking a shot from the corner of the key to go ahead 18-13. Trohkimoinen grabbed a defensive rebound to bring the ball back down the court and pull up for a shot at the top of the key to once again cut the lead to three at 18-15.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed their first lead of the game off free throws by Haley Schneider to go-ahead by one point at 19-18 with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. Leticia Rodriguez took the lead right back for the Eagles though with a jumper. From there, it set the momentum for the Eagles to close out the first half, 35-28.

At the start of the third quarter, Kalli Feddersen scored two quick points in the paint to give the Eagles a nine point lead. The Yellow Jackets gained momentum as Scott started a 9-0 run scoring six of the nine points. Scott made back-to-back layups in the paint followed up with free throws after each shot due to fouls made on the shot. Balster followed behind Scott making 1-of-2 from the line and Trohkimoinen going 2-for-2 to tie it up at 37-all.

With 3:41 remaining in the third quarter, Scott took a shot from downtown to give the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead at 41-40. From there, Balster grabbed a defensive rebound to hand off to Erickson to drive up the court and make a layup in the paint to give the Green and Gold a three-point lead, 43-40.

The Eagles tried to regain the lead at 2:36 with Metzger laying it up in the paint to trail 43-42. It was not enough though as BHSU managed to hold on to the one point lead at the end of the third at 47-46.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Trohkimoinen increased the Yellow Jacket lead driving in the paint to lay it in for two to go up 49-46. Due to a foul on the shot, Trohkimoinen got a free one at the line to give the Yellow Jackets another point to lead 50-46. From there, it did not go the Eagles way as they turned it over and gave it back to the Green and Gold. Scott then drove in the paint to lay it in for two more points to give BHSU a 52-46 lead.

It went round and round in the final six minutes as the Eagles brought the score back up to 52-all. With 2:44 remaining, Metzger made a shot from the line to give the Eagles a one-point lead. Sierra Toms came up big with 1:04 remaining to make a layup in the paint to give the lead back to BHSU at 54-53. The pressure was on as Kalli Feddersen was sent to the line with under 48 seconds to go. Feddersen made 1-of-2 to tie the game at 54-all to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the two teams went round and round trading off the lead with each other until the final 1:34. Rodriguez was sent to theline for two and she drained both of them to give the Eagles a two point lead at 60-58. From there, Chadron increased the lead to close the game out at 67-60.

Scott went 4-of-10 from the field, 1-of-4 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the line in 33 minutes of action. Alongside Scott on the offense, Erickson also scored 14 points while Trohkimoinen had 13.

Scott was strong on defense setting a career-high 12 rebounds and four steals.

Black Hills State falls to 9-16 overall and 9-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Chadron State improves to 7-17 overall and 7-14 in RMAC action.

BHSU sits in a three-way tie with South Dakota Mines and Colorado Christian as both teams fell tonight. South Dakota Mines fell to Regis 75-69 and CCU fell to MSU Denver 72-70.

The Green and Gold travel to Regis for their final regular season game on Saturday, February 25 with tipoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
