ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped its doubleheader to Adams State on Sunday afternoon by scores of 10-1 and 10-2.
Morgan Smith and
Kindall Bethke each went 1-for-5 on the day.
Black Hills State falls to 2-8 on the season and 0-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State improves to 3-8 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Game One: ASU 10 BHSU 1
In the bottom of the first, ASU took a quick 2-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets. Taylor Hays singled to center field to land on base. Paige Reichmuth hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to advance Hays to second. An error by the BHSU defense allowed Hays to advance to third. From there, Gabrielle Griego and April Riggins were walked to load the bases.
Marissa Harmon stepped up to bat and singled through the left side to score Hays and Griego. The Grizzlies went on to score three more runs at the bottom of the third to lead 6-0 over Black Hills State.
In the top of the fourth,
Maddie Druse stepped up to bat for the Yellow Jackets. Druse reached first base on an error by the Grizzlies defense. In the next at-bat,
Kindall Bethke hit a double to left center to score Druse and get the Yellow Jackets on the board at 6-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies scored four more runs to end the game at 10-1 over BHSU.
Alex Wiley was charged with the loss while Whitney Fields picked up the win for the Grizzlies with ten strikeouts.
Game Two: ASU 10 BHSU 2
The Yellow Jackets scored two runs off four hits but a three run inning in the sixth pushed the Grizzlies to a 10-2 victory.
In the top of the third,
Morgan Smith tripled to left field to put herself in scoring position.
Maddie Druse hit a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Smith to score and get the Yellow Jackets on the board at 3-1. From there, the Grizzlies scored three more runs at the bottom of the third to push the lead to 6-1.
In the top of the fifth,
Katelyn Odle stepped up to bat and nailed a triple out to right field to land in scoring position for the Green and Gold. Behind Odle,
Samantha Schoen hit a sacrifice bunt to score Odle and trail the Grizzlies 6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Adams State scores three more runs to take the victory 10-2.
Pamela Sakuma also tallied a hit for the Yellow Jacket offense alongside Odle, Smith and Druse.
Stefanie Witman was charged with the loss after striking out two batters while Lauren Murphy picked up the win for the Grizzlies giving up just two runs and striking out five.
Black Hills State finishes its four game series at Adams State Monday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
