ALAMOSA, Colo. – The bats came alive as the Black Hills State University softball team set a new program record for most runs in a game and split the day with Adams State with a 20-4 win and a 9-0 loss on Monday.
Black Hills State falls to 3-9 on the season and 1-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while Adams State improves to 4-10 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Game One: BHSU 20 ASU 4
In the top of the first,
Morgan Smith was the leadoff batter for the Yellow Jackets to start the scoring series. Smith got walked followed by
Maddie Druse hitting a single to the pitcher off a bunt to advance Smith to second. Bethke sacrificed a bunt to put Smith and Druse in scoring position.
Pitcher Taylor Roberts walked
Lauren Lesniak to load the bases.
Pamela Sakuma stepped up to the plate and singled through the right side to score Smith. From there,
Katelyn Odle singled down the left field line to send Druse home and give another point to the Green and Gold.
Dominique DiManna followed behind Odle and hit a ground out to score
Morgan Vasquez, who pinch ran for Lesniak, to give BHSU a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Yellow Jackets scored 10 more runs to take a commanding 13-0 lead over the Grizzlies. Smith and
Samantha Schoen scored off of a fielding error by the Grizzlies to go up 5-0. Lesniak followed that up with a double to right center to score Bethke and Druse for a 7-0 lead over ASU. Bethke ended the inning with a double to right field to bring home Smith and Schoen for the 13-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets went on to score one run in the third while ASU finally landed on the board scoring four. Jasmine Pemble singled to the pitcher off a bunt but advanced to third on an error by the Yellow Jackets to land in scoring position. On a ground out to second, Tyler Hays sent Pemble home to get the Grizzlies on the board. The next at-bat, April Riggins doubled up the middle to score Gabrielle Griego and Paige Reichmuth to trail 14-3. Marissa Harmon ended the Grizzlies scoring with a double to right field to score Riggins and trail 14-4.
In the final two innings, BHSU closed out the game with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to claim the victory 20-4. The 20 runs scored by Black Hills State sets a new program history record for runs in a single game dating back to 2007.
Kindall Bethke went 3-for-4 tallying a season high five RBI and registered a triple and double.
Morgan Smith and
Maddie Druse each scored four runs for the Yellow Jackets. Eight other players contributed to the BHSU offense tallying hits, runs or RBIs.
Stefanie Witman picked up the win for the Green and Gold striking out two batters and earning her second win of the season while Taylor Roberts was charged with the loss.
Game Two: ASU 9 BHSU 0
A five-run third inning pushed the Grizzlies past the Yellow Jackets in the second game of the day.
Leading 2-0 after two innings, in the bottom of the third April Riggins reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to put herself in scoring position. A single up the middle by Marissa Harmon sent Riggins home to increase the lead 3-0. At the next at-bat, Kaesha Harper doubled to score Mackenzie Villareal and Sheridan VanHoose to push the lead to 5-0. Tyler Hays closed out the third hitting a double to left center to push Kalin Johnson and Harper home to score and lead 7-0.
The Grizzlies went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to claim the victory over the Yellow Jackets 9-0.
Katelyn Odle went 1-for-2 on the offense for the Yellow Jackets.
Alex Wiley was charged with the loss and striking out two batters while Lauren Murphy picked up the win for the Grizzlies and striking out seven batters.
Black Hills State travels to Colorado State University-Pueblo March 4 and 5 to continue conference play with first pitch scheduled for noon Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
