ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in its season opener doubleheader to St. Cloud State University by scores of 5-1 and 7-1.
Maddie London and
Katelyn Odle each went 2-for-6 on the day to lead the Yellow Jackets over the two games.
BHSU falls to 0-2 to start the season while the Huskies move to 2-0.
Game One: St. Cloud State 5 Black Hills State 1
The Yellow Jackets tallied one run on five hits but the Huskies used a five-run fifth inning to pull away from Green and Gold.
In the fifth inning, with one runner on base,
Maddie London connected for a double to left center to score
Claire Fergusson and take a 1-0 lead over the Huskies.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies scored three runs off an error to take the lead over the Yellow Jackets 3-1. St. Cloud State went ahead and scored two more runs to close out the inning 5-1.
Alex Wiley, London,
Kindall Bethke, Smith and
Katelyn Odle all made connections with the ball and tallied hits for the offense. London had one double.
Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and striking out three. Megan Hedstrom picked up the win for the Huskies pitching 7.0 innings and striking out six batters.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 7 Black Hills State 1
In the top of the first,
Morgan Smith walked and stole second while
Maddie London singled to advance Smith to third.
Lauren Lesniak singled to right field to score Smith and give the Green and Gold the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, St. Cloud State scored seven runs off of two errors and a three-run homer by Morgan Emmans.

Stefanie Witman was charged with the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and striking out six. Kate Kopeck picked up the win for the Huskies pitching 7.0 innings and striking out six.
The Green and Gold return to action Saturday morning to close out the series with St. Cloud State. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
