ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in a doubleheader to St. Cloud State Saturday morning by scores of 7-6 and 5-0.
Kindall Bethke led the Yellow Jacket offense going 5-for-7 and tallying a run and RBI.
The Green and Gold fall to 0-4 on the season while the Huskies advance to 4-0 overall.
Game One: St. Cloud State 7, Black Hills State 6
In the first inning, St. Cloud State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets. Abby Bunnell singled to the pitcher to land on base. A double by Jessica Goerger and an error caused Bunnell to score. The Huskies went on to score three more runs in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Morgan Smith singled up the middle to land on base followed by
Maddie London being walked to advance Smith to second. In the next at bat,
Lauren Lesniak doubled down the left field line to score Smith and advance
Makenzi Strong, who pinch ran for London, to third.
Following Lesniak,
Katelyn Odle then singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw scoring
Morgan Vasquez, who pinch ran for Lesniak, and Strong to tie the game at 3-3.
Pamela Sakuma grounded out to shortstop but advanced
Lexi Baker and Odle to second and third.
Kindall Bethke's single to shortstop scored Odle and gave the Yellow Jackets the go-ahead point, 4-3.
The Green and Gold closed out the fifth inning scoring two more runs with a double to left center by
Alex Wiley to score Bethke and Baker. The Huskies responded back scoring three more runs to take the lead back at 7-6. Alyssa Coletto doubled to left field to score both Morgan Emmans and Goerger. Maya Keating singled to the pitcher off a bunt to advance Coletto to third and score on the error.
Smith, Lesniak and Wiley all tallied doubles in the Yellow Jacket offense.
Wiley was charged with the loss pitching 6.0 innings and striking out two batters. Rebecca Harps picked up the win for the Huskies pitching one inning and Jenna Trost earned the save pitching 2.0 innings.
Game Two: St. Cloud State 5 Black Hills State 0
After two scoreless innings, St. Cloud State took the 3-0 lead at the bottom of the third inning. With runners on second and third, Goerger singled to right field to score both Coletto and Libby Bingham. Harps singled up the middle advancing Goerger to second. Emmans singled to center field, advanced to second allowing Goerger to score, and Harps to stop at third. From there, the Huskies scored two more runs in the fourth and sixth.
Stefanie Witman was charged with the loss pitching 6.0 innings and gave up just seven hits. Kate Kopeck picked up the win for the Huskies pitching 7.0 innings and striking out five batters.
Black Hills State travels to Aberdeen, South Dakota, for the Minot State Dome Invite on February 16 and 17 to face Minnesota State University Moorhead, Minot State and the University of Minnesota-Crookston. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m and 11 a.m. both days.
