SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell Sunday afternoon to Colorado Mines by scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
The Green and Gold fall to 3-17 overall and 1-11 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while Colorado Mines improves to 17-5 on the season and 14-2 in conference play.
Game One: CSM 3 BHSU 1
A three-run inning in the seventh slid Colorado Mines past the Yellow Jackets to take game one of the day 3-1.
In the fourth inning,
Morgan Smith led off for BHSU smashing a double to left field.
Stefanie Witman stepped up and singled through the left side advancing Smith home to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
In the seventh inning trailing 1-0, Taylor Klauser reached first on a throwing error by Black Hills State. Brielle Asato replaced Klauser and stole two bases to put the Orediggers in scoring position. At-bat, Paige Noehring singled to shortstop advancing Asato home to tie the game at 1-1.
Noehring stole second to set up scoring position. Kelsey Buechler hit a single down the left field line placing Noehring at third. Buechler stole second and Clara Larson walked to load the bases. Sonoma Toot stepped up and hit a double to left center scoring Buechler and Noehring to give the Orediggers the lead, 3-1.
Witman led the Yellow Jacket offense going 2-for-3 and tallying a RBI while Smith scored the only run for the Green and Gold.
Witman was charged with the loss after striking out four batters. Claire Stringfellow picked up the win for the Orediggers pitching six innings giving up just one run and striking out five. Hallie Smith picked up her fifth save of the season pitching one inning.
Game Two: CSM 3 BHSU 0
After a scoreless three innings, the Orediggers found themselves leading 1-0 in the fourth.
Katie Leiker singled through the left side to land on base. Kara Jones stepped up, smacked a double to left field, and advanced to third on throw scoring Leiker and giving CSM the go-ahead point to lead 1-0.
From there, the Orediggers scored two more runs in the sixth inning to claim the victory 3-0.

Alex Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching seven innings with one strike out while Hallie Smith picked up the win for Colorado Mines striking out six batters.
Black Hills State travels to Chadron State March 25 and 26 with first pitch slated for noon and 11 a.m., respectively.
