CHADRON, Neb. – The Black Hills State University softball team drops its doubleheader at Chadron State by scores of 7-3 and 4-3.
Black Hills State falls to 3-19 on the season and 1-13 in conference action while Chadron improves to 13-15 overall and 10-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Game One: CSC 7 BHSU 3
After a scoreless three innings, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets in the fourth leading off with Lindsey Karlin to single up the middle to land on base. Kayla Michel hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Kendyl Moody, who pinch ran for Karlin, to second base.
From there, Moody advanced to third on a passed ball and ended up scoring off an error by the Yellow Jackets to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles went on to score six more runs between the fifth and sixth innings to claim the 7-3 victory over BHSU.
In the seventh inning,
Katelyn Odle stepped up to bat hitting a single to second base.
Morgan Vasquez walked advancing Odle to second. The next at-bat,
Claire Fergusson singled down the right field line and advanced to second allowing Vasquez to advance to third and scoring Odle on an error by the Eagles. This gave the Yellow Jackets their first run of the game to trail 7-1.
From there,
Lexi Baker singled up the middle allowing enough time for Fergusson and Vasquez to score and gave BHSU two more runs but it was not enough to surpass the Eagles for the win.
Baker went 1-for-4 tallying two RBIs for the Yellow Jacket offense.
Alex Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching 5.1 innings and striking out one batter while Jessica Jarecki picked up the win for the Eagles after striking out 10 batters and giving up just two earned runs.
Game Two: CSC 4 BHSU 3
A two-run inning topped Chadron State over Black Hills State in game two.
In the third inning, Taylor Bauer led off the batting for the Eagles hitting a single out to center field. Courtney Lecher singled to right center allowing Bauer enough time to advance to third. Lecher stole second setting up an insurance run. Sheyann Ludwig sacrificed a ground out to second to advance Lecher to third and score Bauer for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning,
Morgan Smith led off for the Yellow Jackets bunting a single to third base. From there, Smith stole second to set up scoring position. The next at-bat,
Stefanie Witman stepped up and singled up the middle scoring Smith to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth inning, Fergusson stepped up to the plate and singled to the pitcher to land on base. Fergusson went on to steal second to set up the go-ahead run. In the next at-bat, Baker singled to the pitcher advancing Fergusson to third. Baker stole second to set BHSU up for an insurance run.
Makenzi Strong scored Fergusson with a single up the middle and advancing to second on the throw pushing Baker to third and giving BHSU the 2-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Chadron tied the game up 2-2. Ludwig singled to right center to start for the Eagles. Morgan Wilhelm, pinch hit for Karlin, sacrificed a ground out to advance Ludwig to second. Michel stepped up to the plate and singled to right field but advanced to second on an error by the Yellow Jacket defense allowing Ludwig to score for the tying run.
In the sixth inning,
Lauren Lesniak stepped up and selected the right pitch to smash the ball over the fence in left center field to give the Yellow Jackets the go-ahead run at 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Allie Mason walked to lead off for the Eagles. Bauer singled to right center to land on first and advance Katelyn Eldredge, who pinch ran for Mason, to second. The next at-bat, Lecher singled through the left side to load the bases. Ludwig flied out to center field but Bauer was able to score off the error by BHSU and Eldredge scored on the throw to give the Eagles the win at 4-3.
Lesniak went 1-for-3 from the plate tallying a run, RBI and home run for the Yellow Jacket offense.
Stefanie Witman was charged with the loss after striking out four batters while Kinsley Mason picked up the win for the Eagles and Dallas Magnusson picked up her fourth save of the season.
Black Hills State returns to action tomorrow for its second doubleheader at Chadron State with first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
