SB: Odle and Wiley Home Runs Not Enough to Overcome Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped its Sunday doubleheader at Chadron State by scores of 9-3 and 8-1.

Black Hills State falls to 3-21 overall and 1-15 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Chadron improves to 15-15 on the season and 12-7 in RMAC action.

Game One: CSC 9 BHSU 3

A two three-run inning topped the Eagles over the Yellow Jackets.

In the first inning, Courtney Lecher led off the batting order for the Eagles hitting a single to shortstop to land on base. Sheyann Ludwig sacrificed a ground out to third base to advance Lecher to second. The next at-bat, Kayla Michel singled through the left side allowing Lecher to score and put the Eagles on the board, 1-0.

In the second, Katelyn Odle stepped up to the plate and blasted a home run over the left field fence to put the Yellow Jackets on the board and tie the game at 1-1.

From there, Chadron took the lead back with Aspen Eubanks smashing a home run to center field to give the Eagles the go-ahead run. Allie Mason stepped up behind Eubanks and homered to left field to take a two-run lead over the Yellow Jackets at 3-1. The Eagles went on to score another run in the second followed by three in third and two in the fourth to claim the 9-3 victory.

In the sixth inning trailing 9-2, Alex Wiley smashed a home run over the right center fence to make an attempt to close in on the Eagles' lead but it was not enough for the win.

Odle went 1-for-3 tallying an RBI, a run and a home run while Wiley went 1-for-2 and registered a run, RBI and home run.

Kenya Grauberger got her first collegiate start pitching two innings and was charged with the loss while Jessica Jarecki picked up the win for the Eagles striking out six batters in seven innings.

Game Two: CSC 8 BHSU 1

In the first inning, Makenzi Strong started things off for the Green and Gold hitting a single to shortstop to land on base. Before Morgan Smith could get a swing off, Strong stole second and third to put the Yellow Jackets in scoring position.

Following the stolen bases by Strong, Smith walked to land on first base. Smith set up the insurance run by stealing second. The next at-bat, Stefanie Witman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Strong to score and give BHSU a 1-0 lead.

Lecher stepped up for the Eagles to lead off and singled to left field to land on base. Following Lecher, Ludwig smacked a double to left field and advanced Lecher to third.
The next at-bat, Lindsey Karlin walked to load the bases. Michel stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to advance Ludwig to third and score Lecher to tie the game 1-1.

With runners at first and third, Zoe Humphries singled to left field to score Ludwig and give the Eagles the go-ahead run at 2-1. From there, the Eagles went on to score six runs in the second inning and push past the Yellow Jackets for the victory at 8-1.

Strong went 2-for-4 from the plate scoring the only run for the Green and Gold.

In the circle, Witman was charged with the loss after striking out two batters while Kinsley Mason picked up the win for the Eagles after pitching seven innings and striking out two.

Black Hills State returns home for a four-game series hosting RMAC opponent New Mexico Highlands on April 1 and 2 with first pitch slated for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
