SB: ThunderWolves Hit Past Yellow Jackets

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in its day one doubleheader to Colorado State University-Pueblo by scores of 5-4 and 11-0.

Black Hills State falls to 3-11 on the season and 1-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action while Colorado State-Pueblo improves to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in RMAC play.

Game One: CSUP 5 BHSU 4

The ThunderWolves took a quick 2-0 lead over the Yellow Jackets in the second inning. Sabrina Felix hit a double down the right field line. Lexie Martindale singled up the middle and was thrown out at second but was able to advance Felix to third. Christa Angers singled to right field to score Felix.

From there, K'Lee Kent walked to advance Angers to second. Kennedy Smith scored Angers with a single through the right side. CSU-Pueblo went on to score two more runs in the third and fourth to lead the Yellow Jackets 4-0.

Trailing 4-0 at the top of the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets had a breakthrough to end the shutout and get on the board. Katelyn Odle singled to left field to land on base. From there, Maddie London stepped up and smashed a home run to left field to score Odle and trail by two at 4-2.

In the seventh inning, London singled to left field. Jordyn Ballard hit a single through the left side and advanced to second on an error by the ThunderWolves placing Morgan Vasquez, who pinch ran for London, in scoring position at third. Morgan Smith then stepped up to the plate and hit a triple to center field scoring Samantha Schoen, who pinch ran for Ballard, and Vasquez to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings.

It took one run in the eighth inning for the ThunderWolves to end the game. Kennedy Smith singled to left field. Nicola Montoya advanced Hailey Bennett, who pinch ran for Smith, to second with a single through the left side. Gabby Moreno connects for a single to first base to allow Bennett to score and give CSUP the victory, 5-4.

Morgan Smith went 3-for-4 tallying two RBIs and a triple while London connected on 2-for-3 tallying two RBIs and the first home run on the season for the Yellow Jackets.

Wiley was charged with the loss after striking out five batters while Lexie Martindale picked up the win for CSUP striking out one batter.

Game Two: CSUP 11 BHSU 0

A six-run second inning pushed the ThunderWolves over the Yellow Jackets in second game of the day.

Leading 3-0 after one inning, in the bottom of the second Kennedy Smith hit a double to left center to set herself up for scoring position. Alyssa Ubrun singled through the left side to advance Smith to third. Nicola Montoya reached on an error by the Yellow Jackets to load the bases. Gabby Moreno and Sabrina Felix both got walked to score Smith and Ubrun and increase the ThunderWolves lead 5-0.

Lexie Martindale hits a grand slam to center field and scored Felix, Moreno and Montoya to end the second inning and lead 9-0. From there, CSUP scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game 11-0.

Morgan Smith went 2-for-2 while Stefanie Witman and Kenya Grauberger each tallied a hit for the Yellow Jackets.

Witman was charged with loss giving up only three hits while Shannon Lieber picked up the win for the ThunderWolves striking out two batters.

Black Hills State makes its home debut March 11 and 12 hosting Colorado Christian in a four game series. First pitch on Saturday is slated for noon followed by 11 a.m. Sunday.
