DENVER, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped its double header to Metropolitan State University of Denver on Saturday afternoon by scores of 7-0 and 9-1.
Black Hills State falls to 5-31 on the season and 3-25 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while MSU Denver improves to 34-13 overall and 26-6 in RMAC action.
Game One: MSUD 7 BHSU 0
In the first, Hayley Fields led off for the Roadrunners singling out to center field to land on base. Sarena Espinoza's single to shortstop allowed Fields to round the bases and score the first run for the 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners momentum carried into the third inning as Fields tripled down the right field line to set up scoring position. Colissa Bakovich grounded out to shortstop but pushed another run in as Fields scored on the throw to increase the lead 2-0. Annika Anderson stepped up behind Bakovich and smashed a home run over the left field fence to go-ahead 3-0 over the Yellow Jackets.
From there, MSU Denver went on to score four more runs between the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Morgan Smith went 2-for-3 from the plate while
Kindall Bethke,
Katelyn Odle and
Pamela Sakuma all registered the other three hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Alex Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching six innings and striking out three batters while Cassidy Smith picked up the win for MSUD in seven innings and striking out three.
Game Two: MSUD 9 BHSU 1
The Roadrunners picked up the second win of the day in just five innings.
In the second inning, Espinoza hit a leadoff single through the left side to land on base. Darby McGhee stepped up to the plate and reached base on a fielder's choice forcing Espinoza out at second. Carissa Terry drew the walk to place runners on first and second. Smith loaded the bases drawing another walk.
McGhee was called out at home but MSUD kept the bases loaded with Ashlee Kim reaching on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Brooke Lovas drew the walk advancing Kim to second, Smith to third and Terry to score for the 1-0 lead over BHSU. From there, the Roadrunners scored three runs in the third to increase the lead.
Trailing 4-0,
Kindall Bethke singled to second base to start things off for the Yellow Jackets.
Stefanie Witman followed with a single to left field advancing Bethke to second.
Lauren Lesniak stepped up to the plate and singled to right center advancing
Madison Richardson, who pinch ran for Witman, to third and scored Bethke to trail 4-1 in the fourth.
From there, MSU Denver went on to score four runs in the fourth to increase the lead 8-1. The Roadrunners ended the game in the fifth inning scoring another run to win 9-1.
Witman went 2-for-2 from the plate while Bethke went 1-for-2 and scored one run for the Green and Gold.
Morgan Smith,

Maddie Druse and
Claire Fergusson each tallied a hit for BHSU as well.
Witman was charged with the loss after pitching 3.1 innings while Hayley Fields picked up the win giving up just one earned run in five innings.
Black Hills State returns home to host RMAC opponent Regis University in a four-game series on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. First pitch is slated for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
