SB: Rangers Hit Past Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in its doubleheader against Regis University on Saturday by scores of 8-0 and 4-1.

Black Hills State falls to 5-33 on the season and 3-27 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Regis improves to 26-24 overall and 18-16 in the RMAC.

Game One: Regis 8 BHSU 0

After a scoreless first inning, Regis took a 1-0 lead in the second. Lauren Hernandez led off drawing the walk to land on base. The next at-bat, Alyssa Finger walked and advanced Hernandez to second. Melissa Heronema singled to shortstop to load the bases. Macy Cox stepped up and singled up the middle to advance Heronema and Finger and scored Hernandez for the first run of the game.

From there, the Rangers scored two runs in the third inning to lead 3-0.

In the fourth though, Heronema hit a leadoff triple to place herself in scoring position. However, Stefanie Witman drew three outs to get the Yellow Jackets out of a jam. The final out of the inning came with a ground out to Witman.

In the fifth, Regis continued to let the bats fly and stole four bases to take the 8-0 lead and claim the victory. The Rangers scored five runs alone to increase the lead.
Katelyn Odle went 1-for-2 from the plate, tallying the only hit for the Green and Gold.

Witman was charged with the loss after pitching five innings while Logan Losh picked up the win for the Rangers with four strike outs and giving up just one hit.

Game Two: Regis 4 BHSU 1

In the first inning, Black Hills State jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Morgan Smith led off drawing a walk to land on base followed by stealing second base to put herself in scoring position. Then next at-bat, Makenzi Strong stepped up and singled up the middle to advance Smith to third. Strong stole second and a throwing error by the Rangers allowed Smith to score and give the Yellow Jackets the first lead of the game.

In the second, Melissa Heronema hit a leadoff single to left center. Alyssa Finger advanced Heronema to second with a ground out to the pitcher. The next at-bat with two outs, Laura Scheffel singled up the middle allowing Heronema to score and tie the game 1-1.

After two scoreless innings, the Rangers took the lead in the fifth. With one out, Scheffel stepped up to the plate and drew the walk to land on base. Behind Scheffel, Bradey King smashed a double to right center to score Scheffel and take the 2-1 lead.

From there, Regis went on to score two more runs in the seventh inning to claim the victory 4-1.

Smith scored the only run for the Green and Gold while Strong, Stefanie Witman, Maddie London, and Katelyn Odle all tallied hits and went 1-for-3 from the plate.

Alex Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching seven innings with three strikeouts while Taylor Armitage picked up the win for the Rangers giving up just one run.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Sunday, April 23 against Regis and host the First Responders Day with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
