SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee recently held its Awards Night honoring student-athlete both for academics and athletic excellence.
The Male Jacket of the Year went to
Jonah Theisen, who was the 2016 National Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, along with qualifying for the 2017 indoor track & field championships.
The Female Jacket of the Year went to volleyball's
Lacy Stevens after she was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She also ended her career as the Yellow Jackets all-time leader in digs.
SAAC awarded a Faculty Mentor of the Year award to Dr. John Dixson, a professor in the school
The evening featured academic awards including the Schallenkamp Award, given to the highest GPA to a female and male student-athlete each year. The 2017 winners were
Taylor Trohkimoinen of women's basketball team and
Josh Davis of cross country and track & field teams.
Along with the individual awards, a team award given to the squad with the highest GPA was given to the women's triathlon team with a 3.676. The GPA is a new high for any squad at BHSU.
Yellow Jacket All-Academic First and Second Teams were awarded along with a Rising Academic Star. Overall, all student-athletes combined for a 3.033 GPA, an increase for the third-straight year.
