GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team drops its doubleheader Saturday afternoon against No. 19 Colorado Mesa by scores of 12-1 and 10-0.

Black Hills State falls to 5-27 on the season 3-21 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while CMU improves to 32-4 overall and 25-2 in the conference.

Game One: CMU 12 BHSU 1

A five-run inning pushed the Mavericks over the Yellow Jackets in game one.

In the second inning leading 2-0, Zoe Pakes led off for CMU hitting a double to left center. Maggie Manwarren then hit a bunt to third base for a single to advance Pakes to third. Manwarren stole second to set up another run for the Mavericks. The next at-bat, Alexandria Dufour singled out to left field, scoring Pakes and pushing Manwarren to third to give CMU a 3-0 lead.

From there, Dufour stole second to put herself in scoring position. Well it paid off as AnnMarie Torres singled up the middle to fill the bases but an error by the Yellow Jackets allowed Torres to advance to second scoring Dufour and Manwarren to increase the Mavericks lead 5-0. CMU went on to score three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to end the game in five innings, 12-1.

In the third inning, Alex Wiley hit a leadoff home run right over the left field fence to score the only run for the Green and Gold but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Wiley led the offense going 2-for-2 from the plate hitting a home run and an RBI.

In the circle, Wiley was charged with the loss after pitching four innings and striking out two batters while McKenzie Surface picked up with win for the Mavericks striking out seven and giving up just one earned run.

Game Two: CMU 10 BHSU 0

The Mavericks momentum carried into game two as they took a quick 2-0 lead over BHSU.

In the first inning, Dufour stepped up to lead off for CMU taking a base on balls. Dufour then stole second to set up scoring position. The next at-bat, Baylee Boren hit a single to left field to score Dufour. From there, Torres singled down the right field line pushing Boren to third in scoring position. Kaila Jacobi loaded the bases with a walk.

With bases loaded, Kellie Mrofcza walked scoring Boren to end the inning 2-0. From there, the Mavericks went on to score three runs in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to win 10-0 and shutout the Yellow Jackets.

Stefanie Witman and Wiley each tallied a hit for the Green and Gold in two at-bats.

In the circle, Witman was charged with the loss after pitching four innings and striking out three while Andy Hancock picked up the win for CMU giving up just two hits and striking out five.
