PUEBLO, Colo. – A double-digit effort by three players, including a double-double by
Fraser Malcolm, carried the Black Hills State University men's basketball team to its second win and season sweep over the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves, 72-67, on Saturday evening.
The Green and Gold improve to 9-5 on the season and 5-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action, while the ThunderWolves fall to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in RMAC play.
The Yellow Jackets came out on fire, going on an 8-0 run to start the contest.
Fraser Malcolm started the run, hitting a jumper from the top of the key. A foul by the ThunderWolves placed
Stefan Desnica at the line, who hit both, and followed it up with a layup.
Makaleb McInnis closed out the run hitting a layup. A shot by Mika Nuolivirta ended the Green and Gold run at 8-2.
McInnis answered with back-to-back shots from downtown to increase the Green and Gold lead to 14-2.
With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, the Yellow Jackets led, 21-9, before the ThunderWolves closed in with a 10-0 run, coming within one point at 21-20, and tying it up at 23-all.
However, that was not enough, as Black Hills State closed out the first half leading by five at 33-28.
After halftime, the Green and Gold jumped out to an 8-0 run again with
Connor O'Hearn and
Dez Stoudamire each hitting a shot from downtown and registering assists to each other. Malcolm followed behind with a jumper to increase the lead, 41-30. Gavin Liggett of the ThunderWolves ended the run with a shot from behind the arc to bring it within eight at 41-33.
With 9:07 remaining in the game,
Jacob Perkins tipped one in off his rebound to increase the Yellow Jacket lead again to 12 at 53-41. The ThunderWolves tried to cut in on the lead, but Perkins made a layup followed by
Hoyt Nicholas knocking one in from beyond the arc to increase the BHSU lead, 58-43.
With a 12-point lead for BHSU at 2:28, CSUP went on an 8-0 run to come within four points at 66-62, threatening the Yellow Jackets lead. With less than a minute to go, Josh Smith of CSU-Pueblo hit a layup along the baseline to come within three at 67-64, but it was not enough, as BHSU closed out the game, 72-67, for its sweep of the ThunderWolves on the season.
The Green and Gold went 26-of-58 (44.8 percent) from the field, 8-of-25 (32.0 percent) from behind the arc, and 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) from the line.
McInnis led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed seven boards, while Stoudamire had 11 points. Malcolm registered his fifth season double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
"We had a great start to both halves and that was critical," said head coach
Jeff Trumbauer. "We need to find a way to get wins on the road. We had too many turnovers and that is kind of what took our run away. However, we took better care of the basketball in the second half."
Following the weekend, the Green and Gold return home for a four-game home stand starting on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13 hosting Fort Lewis College and Adams State. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
