SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State women's basketball team gets ready to continue nonconference play, on November 16 and 17, in the Ramada Classic Tournament, hosted by Southwest Minnesota State. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. on Friday against William Jewell College, and 1 p.m. on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Marshall, Minn.
William Jewell enters the weekend coming off a 67-52 win against Adams State, to open the season with a 1-0 record. The Cardinals carried a 12-14 overall record in the 2017-18 season (9-9 conference), making the postseason with an appearance in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.
The Cardinals shot 46 percent (20-for-43) from the field against Adams State, while the Grizzlies were 22-for-55 (40 percent) from the floor. William Jewell was 6-for-18 beyond the arc (33.3 percent), while Adams shot 21.7 percent (5-for-23). The Cardinals totaled 18 turnovers and outrebounded the Grizzlies 35-25.
In her freshman debut, Antoinette Mussorici led William Jewell in its season opener scoring 17 points, followed by teammate Kayla Harrell with 14 points. Kelsi York led the Cardinals shooting two 3-pointers. On defense for the Cardinals, Kiara Bradley brought down seven rebounds, while Natalie Closser had six.
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside holds a 1-1 overall record after falling to Walsh University, 81-75. Parkside was 5-13 in league play last season and finished with a 9-21 overall record.
The Rangers have shot 37.3 percent (47-for-126) from the field against opponents this season and have shot 26-for-30 (86.7 percent) from the line. Parkside has totaled 26 turnovers, while scoring 18 points off turnovers. The Rangers average 31.5 rebounds per game, while opponents average 41.5.
Parkside's offense is led by Ali Bettencourt, averaging 18.5 points per game, after a season-high performance of 22 points against Walsh. Bettencourt has made 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) beyond the arc to lead the conference with a 53.3 percentage.
Carolina Rahkonen leads the Rangers with 11 rebounds, while teammates Bettencourt and Georgie Eishold total 10 rebounds each.
Black Hills State recorded two wins in Texas to open the new season, including the Yellow Jackets 62-57 comeback victory against Texas A&M International. The Green and Gold came back from a 14-point deficit to defeat the Dustdevils.
Black Hills State out shot opponents this past weekend shooting 40.4 percent from the field (41-for-104) over the weekend, while opponents shot 34-for-110 (30.9 percent). The Yellow Jackets were 9-for-34 beyond the arc (26.5 percent) and tallied 36.5 rebounds per game.
The Yellow Jackets are led by sophomore
Lyndzi Rich, averaging 11.5 points per game after leading BHSU in Saturday's game with 19 points. Behind Rich is
Morgan Ham, averaging 10.5 points per game.
Julia Seamans leads the offense going 3-for-11 (.273 percent) beyond the arc. Seamans averages five assists per game to lead the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
On defense, Rich totals 14 rebounds, with seven of them being on defense. Ham and
Katie Messler have tallied nine rebounds each on the season. Sophomore
Racquel Wientjes leads the Green and Gold with five steals.
The Yellow Jackets will next tip off conference play against school rival South Dakota Mines, in Rapid City, S.D. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. against the Hardrockers at the King Center, on December 1.
