SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men's basketball team began the 2018-19 season with an 82-50 loss to No. 16 ranked Northern State University on Friday evening.
Fraser Malcolm led the way for the Yellow Jackets (0-1) with 15 points, while Sava Dukic had eight points in his collegiate debut.
The Wolves (2-1) jumped out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back. The Yellow Jackets used an 11-2 run to get within three points, 20-17, with 8:49 left in the first half, but NSU responded with seven consecutive points to go back in front by 10 points. The Wolves led, 45-26, after the first half of play.
Northern State started out the second half with five consecutive points before Stefan Desnica made a lay-up assisted by Connor O'Hearn for the first points of the period for BHSU. Malcolm had a three-point play to bring the Green and Gold within 22 points with 15:51 left to play, but the Yellow Jackets would not get closer, as the Wolves earned the nonconference victory, 82-50.
BHSU shot 34.0 percent from the field (17-for-50), while NSU was 50.8 percent from the floor (32-for-63). The Yellow Jackets were 1-for-12 (8.3 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Wolves were 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) on three-pointers. The Green and Gold were outrebounded by NSU, 38-33.
Ian Smith and Parker Fox led the Wolves with 13 points each, while Justin Decker added 10 points.
The Green and Gold will next take on Augustana University to wrap up the East-West Challenge on November 17. The game is scheduled to tip off at 4:30 p.m. mountain time.
