WBB: Yellow Jackets use big first quarter to run past Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Four Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, as the Black Hills State University women's basketball team rolled to a 76-51 victory over Adams State University on Friday evening.

Lyndzi Rich led the way for the Yellow Jackets (7-1, 3-1 RMAC), scoring 19 points. Racquel Wientjes had 16 points, Morgan Ham added 14 points, and Julia Seamans recorded 11 points.

The Grizzlies (1-5, 1-3 RMAC) jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but BHSU responded with a 20-0 run to lead, 22-5, at the end of the first quarter.

ASU outscored the Green and Gold in the second (16-15) and third (20-17) quarters, but BHSU still led, 54-41, with one period to play.

With 6:39 to play, the Grizzlies cut the lead to nine, 58-49, but the Yellow Jackets remained in control, as back-to-back three-pointers by Ashlee Beacom and Seamans quickly put the visitors back up by 15 points. The BHSU defense held ASU to just two points in the final 6:59, as the Green and Gold won comfortably, 76-51.

BHSU shot 49.2 percent from the field (29-for-59), while ASU was 35.8 percent from the floor (19-for-53). The Yellow Jackets were 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies were 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (10-for-14), while Adams State was 47.4 percent (9-for-19). The Green and Gold were edged in rebounding by ASU, 36-35.  

Stephanie Ruiz led the Grizzlies with 21 points, while Brooke Neal added 11.

The Green and Gold will next play at Fort Lewis College in the final game of 2018. The game, on December 16, is scheduled to tip off at 3:30 p.m.
