SPEARFISH, S.D. – Three players scored in double figures, as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team cruised by Colorado Christian, 97-73, on Saturday evening.
Fraser Malcolm had 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (13-10, 10-9 RMAC).
Dez Stoudamire was 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line, finishing with 19 points, while
Connor O'Hearn chipped in 13.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with
Makaleb McInnis knocking down a trey and a jumper. BHSU attempted to keep the Cougars (4-20, 3-15 RMAC) at arms-length, but eventually CCU climbed back into the game, and tied it up, 20-20, with 8:37 left in the first half. Although the visitors never held a lead, they remained tight with the Green and Gold until three minutes left in the half, when the Yellow Jackets started pushing out the lead again.
Up three points with three minutes to play, BHSU went on a 7-2 run to hold an eight point lead, 42-34, with 1:36 left in the first half. The home team eventually led, 50-40, at the break.
The Cougars scored the first two points of the second half to get within eight points, but Malcolm responded with a layup of his own to push the lead back to double digits, where it would remain for the duration of the game. On the way to leading by a game-high 25 points, Stoudamire scored nine consecutive points, including two three pointers and an old-fashioned three-point play. The Yellow Jackets eventually earned a 24-point victory by a final score of 97-73.
BHSU shot 64.5 percent from the field (40-for-62), while CCU was 52.8 percent from the floor (28-for-53). The Yellow Jackets were 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Cougars were 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 7-for-8 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line, while Colorado Christian was 10-for-12 (83.3 percent). The Green and Gold outrebounded the Cougars, 28-21.
Isaiah Hanson led all scorers with 21 points, while Justin Engesser had 13 and Christian Hyatt added 10 for the Cougars.
The Green and Gold next host Colorado Mesa in the final home game of the season. The game, on Saturday, February 17, is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
