SB: BHSU drops double header to CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team dropped a double header to Colorado Christian University on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars (17-1) took game one, 7-0, before winning the second game, 9-0, in five innings over the Yellow Jackets (2-12).

CCU 7, BHSU 0
Alex Wiley led off the game by walking, but was eventually stranded. Colorado Christian took advantage, going up, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning. In the third inning, with the score the same, Wiley hit a one-out single through the left side. Morgan Smith walked in the ensuing at bat to put a Yellow Jacket in scoring position. However, BHSU was unable to capitalize, and stranded two runners.

The Cougars used a five-run third inning to take control of the game, 6-0. They would add an insurance run in the fifth inning to take a seven-run lead. The Yellow Jackets were unable to bring any runs across, and ultimately fell, 7-0.

Maddie London and Wiley each recorded a hit for the Green and Gold in the game.

Melissa Gellermann (1-6) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. She threw 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs while striking out five.

CCU 9, BHSU 0 (5 innings)
The second game started off in a similar way to the first game of the day. Wiley reached base to open the game, this time via a Cougar error. The Yellow Jackets were unable to bring her around, and the Cougars then scored three runs in the bottom of the first. CCU added three runs in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth.

BHSU was held to just one hit, a double by Kindall Bethke.

Paige McGuire (0-2) took the loss in the circle. She threw 1.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned). Breanne Henricksen threw 0.1 innings, allowing two runs, while Gellermann threw 2.0 innings, giving up one run while striking out two.

The Green and Gold will take on CCU in another double header on Sunday, March 11. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
