COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Black Hills State University softball team fell in a doubleheader to University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets (9-29, 9-21 RMAC) fell in the first game, 12-0, in five innings, before the Mountain Lions (25-25, 20-18 RMAC) took the second game, 7-3.
UCCS 12, BHSU 0 (5 innings)
The Mountain Lions jumped on top fast, scoring six runs in the first inning. They added five more runs in the second, and one in the third.
The Yellow Jackets got two runners aboard during the game, including when
Maddie London was hit by a pitch. However, the Green and Gold bats were cold, as UCCS took the game, 12-0.
Alex Wiley (4-11) took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) in 1.1 innings.
Melissa Gellermann threw the final 2.2 innings, giving up one run while striking out two.
UCCS 7, BHSU 3
The Mountain Lions scored first in the second game, going up, 1-0, in the first inning. However, the Yellow Jackets immediately responded, when
Maddie London opened the top of the second with a home run to center field.
UCCS added two runs in the second, before BHSU scored one run in the third.
Kindall Bethke earned a two-out walk to start things.
Katelyn Odle then got a single up the middle.
Maddi Fidler then singled up the middle, allowing Bethke to come around and score, cutting the Mountain Lion lead to one, 3-2.
In the fourth inning, the Green and Gold tied the game, 3-3, when
Melissa Gellermann, who had doubled, came around to score after MaKayla Perry put the ball in play. UCCS responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, and added two insurance runs in the sixth. Although
Claire Fergusson singled, and moved over to third base, in the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets were unable to plate any more runs, falling, 7-3.
London had one RBI on her fifth homer of the year, while Fidler also recorded one run batted in to go along with her two hits.
Melissa Gellermann (5-14) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed seven runs (six earned) in 6.0 innings of work, striking out three.
The Green and Gold will play another doubleheader against the Mountain Lions on Sunday, April 29. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
