GUNNISON, Colo. – Stephanie Stagner scored her first career goal, but the Black Hills State University women's soccer team fell to Western State Colorado University, 3-1, on Friday afternoon.
The first half was a box-to-box affair, as both teams fought to gain the upper hand. However, the defenses on both sides were able to keep the score 0-0 entering halftime.
The second half started out much the same as the first, with both teams holding some possession. However, in the 60th minute, Alex Mason was able to score from 30-yards out to put the Mountaineers (2-7, 2-3 RMAC) up, 1-0. In the 73rd minute, Mason would double the lead for Western, when she scored off a free kick. Just five minutes later, Caitlyn Cox scored, putting WSCU up, 3-0.
In the 82nd minute, the Yellow Jackets (0-10, 0-5 RMAC) were able to get a goal back. Morgan Smith had the ball along the right flank. She put a ball across the face of the goal, and Stagner one-timed the cross into the back of the net. The goal was the first for the freshman in a Yellow Jacket uniform, and was also the first goal scored during RMAC play for BHSU this season. The game would finish with a 3-1 scoreline, giving the Mountaineers the victory.
The Mountaineers outshot the Yellow Jackets, 28-5. Stagner's one shot in the game was the goal, while Rose Miller had two shots to lead BHSU. Teagen Hartley (0-1), making her first career start, allowed three goals while making 11 saves in 90 minutes.
