LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team took down New Mexico Highlands, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. Mikayla Hernandez scored twice in the game.
The Yellow Jackets (3-8-1, 3-4-1 RMAC) started off on the front foot. They came close to opening the scoring in the 11th minute when a shot by Abigail Carlson hit the right post. In the 18th minute, BHSU would break through when Hernandez scored her first goal of the match, putting the visitors up, 1-0.
The Cowgirls (0-9, 0-7 RMAC)) answered back in the 22nd minute when Janis Martinez scored.
The Green and Gold would go ahead again in the 27th minute, this time on a Katie Nielson goal. However, just before halftime, NMHU would level the game again.
The second half started out as a back-and-forth affair, but in the 63rd minute, the Cowgirls were called for a foul in the box. Hernandez calmly stepped to the penalty spot and buried her shot, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 advantage. NMHU would make a late push, but the BHSU defense would hold, securing the conference victory.
Hernandez had two goals and assisted on the third. Nielson led the Yellow Jackets with five shots and tallied a goal. Dz-Rae Jara (3-5-1) earned the win in goal for the Green and Gold. She made eight saves while allowing two goals in 90 minutes.
The Green and Gold will next be in action October 20 when they host Regis. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
