Spearfish, SD – Black Hills State University is ready to host the second annual East – West Challenge. Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Teams Northern State and Augustana University will travel to Spearfish, SD to take on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Teams South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Black Hills State University. All action will be at the Donald E. Young center.
Friday night will see the #15 Wolves take on the Hardrockers at 5:30pm (MT), and the Yellow Jackets will host the Vikings at 7:30pm (MT). On Saturday, the Vikings and Hardrockers will faceoff at 5:30pm (MT) while the Yellow Jackets will face the Wolves at 7:30pm (MT).
The Yellow Jackets and the Wolves have faced off 82 times with Aberdeen leading the series 62-20. The teams last faced each other in the 2018 East-West challenge where Northern won 82-50. NSU recorded 37 points off the bench, 34 points in the paint, and 23 points off turnovers.
This season, Northern State heads to the Black Hills following two losses to Southeastern Oklahoma and No. 9 Southern Nazarene. The Wolves are shooting 40.3 percent from the field, 22.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 62.5 from from the foul line. Parker Fox is leading NSU averaging 20.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.4% from the floor.
In the second match up of the weekend, the Yellow Jackets take on the Augustana Vikings. The two teams have squared off intermittently 20 times in the last 100 years. Since around the 1920's, the Vikings lead the series 13-7. The Yellow Jackets won over the Vikings in last years East-West challenge 65-62 in a nail bitter.
The Vikings are 2-0 after defeating both Arkansas Monticello 90-73 and Central Missouri 76-72. Matt Cartwright will need to be contained as he is averaging 22 points per game, shooting 42.4 percent from the field.
