SPEARFISH, S.D. – Besting
Heidi VanLishout's previous school record, senior
Shayna Soderstrom blazed down the home stretch in 7.89 to set the new school record in the 60m dash. She also ran the second fastest time in the 200m dash, winning in 25.48. Meanwhile, sophomore
Whitney Scott and freshman
Hannah Hendrick went two and three in the pole vault, both clearing 11' 9.75". Those vaults are an NCAA DII National Championship provisional qualifying mark and ties them both at fourth all time on the top ten lists. These marks led the Black Hills State University women to a dominating team win, scoring 229 points. The next closet team had 87 points.
Behind Soderstrom in the 60m and 200m was freshman
Breanne Fuller who took third in the 60m and second in the 200m. Sophomore
Julette Goehring was third in the 200m. In the 400m, junior
Zoe Langseth captured the win with a 60.38, while freshman Taylor Lundquist was close behind in second. Juniors
Brittney Marosok and Katie Campbell took first and third, respectively in the 60m hurdles.
The 4x400m relay of
Janae Bjorgum,
Breanne Fuller,
Cailey Roth, and
Zoe Langseth ran 4:03.82 to win. That time is seventh fastest ever run at BHSU.
In the field, Campbell moved to fifth all time, taking second in the triple jump after leaping 36' 6.75". Senior
Alexandra Richards won the high jump in 5' 3.75", and took third in the shot put with a toss of 38' 11.5". Freshman
Kyla Sawvell won the shot in 41' 5.00", and took second in the weight with a hurl of 53" 7.00". That throw moves her to sixth all time.
In the distance events, freshman Erika Dykstra won the 800 meters, while sophomore
Mayson Hudyma was second. Junior
Abbie Fredrick ran alone in the mile to win in 5:10.18, while senior
Savannah Davis ran to third place.
The men also won the meet with 157 points. Junior
Jordan Theisen ran to the fourth best ever 800m in school history, running 1:55.27 to take the win. Teammate, senior
Keegan Her Many Horses, was right behind for second. In the mile, junior Jake Iverson ran 4:20.98 to take second. Senior Nate Fredrick ran with one of the top 3000-meter runners in the nation to take second in 8:39.36.
In the sprints, junior
Garrett Snook returned to the track to win the 400m in 50.89, while senior
Seth Kovar captured the win in the 60m hurdles in 8.57.
In the high jump, sophomores
Allan McDonnell and
Drazen Moratzka went first and second. Moratzka, who cleared 6' 4.25", moved to number nine all time for BHSU.
On Friday night, the Distance Medley Relay, consisting of seniors
Jonah Theisen and
Levi Fried and juniors
Jordan Theisen and
Tristan Hepp, ran 10:03.69. That time is the sixth fastest in school history, the fastest ever run by a BHSU squad in the Donald E Young Center Fieldhouse, and is a NCAA DII provisional mark. That time converts down to 9:49.99 with the track size and altitude conversion, which is currently seventh in the nation. Twelve teams will make it into the National Championships.
The 5k was also contested, and the Green and Gold picked up two wins. Junior
Nicole Allerdings and redshirt freshman
Xiomara Robinson ran against the clock to take first and second respectively. Facing a larger field, sophomore
Keith Osowski ran his first ever collegiate indoor 5k to pick up the win in an unofficial time of 15:47.
Next up for Yellow Jacket Track is the RMAC Championships. Accepted entries will be declared this Monday.
