40th Old Baldy Golf Classic Held

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The 40th Old Baldy Golf Classic was held May 31-June 2 at the Old Baldy Golf Club in Saratoga, Wyo.

This tournament has been the longest running fundraiser for student-athlete scholarships at Black Hills State University.  It was first started in 1979 by Floyd Rummel II who was the father of an alum and former football player, Floyd Rummel III, at Black Hills State University.  Floyd was the member sponsor at Old Baldy that enabled us to have a tournament there for many years.  When we needed a new member sponsor, Henry and Sue Hewitt, who has a daughter, Stephanie, who played volleyball at BHSU, stepped up to fill that role.  The Gold level sponsor for the tournament this year was Juneks Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Spearfish, S.D.  Their sponsorship kicked off a great tournament that has raised over $500,000 for student-athlete scholarships over the 40 years.

This was once again a successful year for the tournament, and it even produced a hole-in one winner!  Rory Maynard and the Rummels sponsored a hole-in-one challenge.  James London of Trophy Club, Texas was the lucky golfer to hit the shot the first day and win $5,000.  Taking first place team honors for the two days was the team of Steve Horne, Dave Hughes, Jason Slingsby, and Rick Tetreault.  Second place went to Doug Graslie, Neil Grandbouche, Doug Hughes, and Tad Brewer.  On the individual side, there were eight winners to recognize.  The white low gross winner came down to a scorecard playoff with Chris Horne taking first place and Floyd Rummel IV taking second.  White low net first place went to Doug Hughes and second place went to Jason Slingsby.  The gold low gross winner was Jim Weisbeck, with Pete Cappa coming in at second.  Gold low net honors went to Steve Meeker, and second place went to Doug Materi.  There was a tie for first place for the Calcutta portion of the tournament.  The teams who tied for first were comprised of Dick Fisher, Dave Fieber, Jess Weaver, and Bill Hughes, Jr. on one team, and Floyd Rummel IV, Pete Cappa, Tim Berdahl, and Doug Materi on the other.

"We are so grateful to our member sponsors Sue and Henry Hewitt for making it possible to have this tournament at Old Baldy, the Rummel family for giving it the start to begin with and support through the years, and Juneks for being the Gold Sponsor in this 40th year.  Ron Junek is also the only person who has been to all 40 Old Baldy golf tournaments so we are very thankful to him for his support throughout all the years," said Assistant Athletic Director Melissa Christensen. " There are so many amazing supporters who have attended this event.  Whether they attended just one, or all them, we truly appreciate the support and what it has done for Black Hills State University Athletics.  Thank you!"
