LUBBOCK, Texas – The Black Hills State University volleyball team dropped two matches at the Chap Classic on Friday. The Yellow Jackets (2-4) fell, 3-0, to the University of Texas-Permian Basin, and 3-1, to Lubbock Christian.
UTPB 3, BHSU 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-17)
In the first set, the Yellow Jackets and Falcons traded sideouts until the score was tied, 4-4. At that point, BHSU grabbed the momentum, jumping out to an 11-7 lead. However, after a Texas Permian Basin timeout, the Falcons used a 5-0 run to gain a one-point advantage. After the two teams battled back-and-forth, and the score tied, 19-19, the Falcons went on a 6-2 run to claim the 1-0 set lead.
After the score was tied, 3-3, in the second set, UTPB gradually built a lead, taking advantage of Yellow Jacket attack errors to ultimately win, 25-15. The third set played out much the same way, with the score being tied up, 4-4, before the Falcons gained the momentum. Texas Permian Basin claimed the third set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
Sierra Ward led the Green and Gold with nine kills, while Laurel Lech tallied another double-double with 17 assists and 13 digs. Haedyn Rhoades recorded 15 digs in the match.
LBU 3, BHSU 1 (28-26, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18)
The first set was tight from the get-go. The Yellow Jackets eventually took a four-point lead, 10-6, but the Chaps came back to tie it up, 11-11. The teams traded sideouts, and each team had two set points before the game was tied, 26-26. LBU was able to squeak out the last two points, earning the 28-26 win.
In the second set, the Chaps scored the first point, but kills by Kindra Cerrone and Madee Hoopman gave the Yellow Jackets a lead they would not relinquish. They eventually built themselves a cushion, leading by as many as seven. BHSU would win the set, 25-20, to tie up the match.
BHSU led, 6-2, in the three set, but Lubbock Christian chipped away and came back to tie it up, 8-8. The Chaps would keep the momentum, outscoring the Green and Gold en route to a 25-19 set win. LBU would keep the foot on the accelerator heading into the fourth set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, and eventually winning, 25-18, to take the match, 3-1.
In the match, Madee Hoopman led the squad with 13 kills. Laurel Lech had 19 assists, 11 digs, and nine kill, while Tess Thomas recorded 25 assists and 10 digs. Haedyn Rhoades tallied 20 digs.

The Yellow Jackets will wrap up nonconference play September 14 when they play two more matches at the Chap Classic. BHSU will play Pittsburg State and Southwestern Oklahoma State University with the game against the Gorillas set to begin at 8 a.m. mountain time.
