SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team played Fort Lewis College to scoreless draw on Friday evening.
The Skyhawks (1-2-1, 0-0-1 RMAC) started off the game on the front foot, playing in their attacking third and recording two shots in the first six minutes. However, the Yellow Jackets (0-4-1, 0-0-1 RMAC) got themselves back into the game, taking advantage of the possession they had to get shots off and take dangerous corners. FLC had a flurry of corner kicks in the middle of the half, but the Green and Gold defense held firm and the two teams entered halftime scoreless.
The second half began with end-to-end action. Rose Miller got a shot off for the Yellow Jackets less than a minute into the period, but the Skyhawks countered with a pair of shots by Valerie Maestas less than a minute later, the first of which was blocked, and the second of which forced a save out of Dz-Rae Jara. FLC had a shot go off the post in the 70th minute, but neither team could find the back of the net in regulation.
In overtime, the Skyhawks outshot the Yellow Jackets, 6-1, but the back line held their ground, keeping FLC off the scoresheet. At the end of the overtime period, lightning was observed near the field, and the game was finalized.
Mikayla Hernandez and Alexa Buckley each recorded two shots. Eight other Yellow Jackets tallied one shot, including Cait Kelly, who had the only shot on goal for the home side. Overall, the Skyhawks outshot the Yellow Jackets, 26-12. Dz-Rae Jara played all 100 minutes in goal, making six saves in the scoreless draw.
The Green and Gold will next host Adams State University on Sunday, September 22. The match is scheduled to kick off at noon at Ronnie Theisz Field.
