MARSHALL, Minn. – The Black Hills State University women's soccer team led at the half, but Southwest Minnesota State University scored two late goals to win, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
The game started out as a cagey affair, with no shots recorded until the 14th minute when Abbey Hoisington forced Yellow Jacket (0-2) goalkeeper, Teagen Hartley, into a save. Despite the Mustangs (1-0) holding most of the possession, Rose Miller got the ball on the right flank and put a cross in front of goal in the 31st minute. Katie Nielson was waiting to put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The two teams would enter halftime with BHSU holding a 1-0 lead.
SMSU began the second half with three shots in quick succession, but the Yellow Jacket defense was able to hold. However, in the 78th minute, Jessica Jugovich scored for the Mustangs to tie the game, and less than two minutes later, Erin Fisher put the home team ahead, 2-1, which would be the final.
Nielson tallied the goal on one shot, while Miller had the assist for the Yellow Jackets in addition to recording a shot. Mikayla Hernandez led BHSU with two shots taken in the match. The Green and Gold were outshot 13-4. Teagen Hartley played the first 45 minutes in goal, making three saves. Dz-Rae Jara (0-1) played the final 45, allowing both goals while making two saves.
The Green and Gold are next in action Thursday, September 12 in Billings, Montana. The Yellow Jackets will play the University of Mary with action set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
