Gunnison, Colo. – The Black Hills State University women's basketball team dropped their season opener to the Western Colorado Mountaineers 74-81.
After an evenly matched first three quarters between both teams the Mountaineers were able to pull ahead in the 4
th quarter after stringing together multiple field goals in a row with no answers from the Yellow Jackets.
Entering the half, both teams had 36 points and after a strong 3
rd quarter the Yellow Jackets were able to head into the 4
th quarter up 56-55. The Mountaineers put up a strong defensive front in the 4
th quarter only allowing the Yellow Jackets to score 18 points.
The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by
Morgan Ham and
Racquel Wientjes who were both able to record points in the double digits. Ham lead the attack scoring 27 of the teams 74 points including four three pointers. Wientjes was close behind scoring 19 points and sinking three three pointers of her own. Wientjes also lead the team in rebounds pulling down seven while
Katie Messler pulled down five rebounds of her own.
As a team the Yellow Jackets shot 22 of 57 (39%) from the field, including 9-18 (50%) from beyond the arc. The team also shot 75% (21 of 28) at the charity stripe.
The Green and Gold are back in action tomorrow night for a show down with Fort Lewis College. Tip off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
