Brookings, SD – The Black Hills State University track and field teams had phenomenal performances at day two of the SDSU Indoor Classic. The Top Ten All Time Lists are no longer recognizable, countless athletes posted personal bests, a school record was broken, and several athletes improved their national standings.
"Overall the weekend provided just what we needed it to," said head coach
Seth Mischke. "There was great competition on a stellar track that many of the team took advantage of to produce some great performances. We are about two weeks out from the RMAC championships and I feel we are in a good position to finish out the indoor season strong."
Kyla Sawvell had an incredible toss of 60 feet ten inches in the weight throw to pass Madison McLaughlin and move to number two in school history. She handily won the meet with that mark and is currently tenth in the country. She also took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 45' – 03".
The Pole Vaulters also had a standout day.
Whitney Scott improved her personal best clearing 12' – 09.25" which is still number two in school history and now 14
th in the nation. She finished in second overall.
Hannah Hendrick tied her personal best of 11" 09.75" to tie for third. That mark is fifth all time and 48
th in the nation.
Elsewhere in the field events,
Samantha Bates took fourth in the triple jump with her mark of 35" – 04.25" while Katie Campbell was seventh with her jump of 35' 01.25".
The Yellow Jackets had a blistering day on the track.
Abbie Fredrick narrowly missed cracking the 5 minute mark running 5:00.02 in the mile. That time was a huge personal best, was good for second place in the meet, and is the second fastest mile run in school history. Teammate Ruby Lundquist was close behind in seventh running 5:06.57. That time is number seven in school history.
In the 800m,
Taylor Lundquist finished second running 2:18.91 which was a big personal best and the 8
th fastest in school history. Teammate
Mayson Hudyma finished fourth in 2:19.73 which is another personal best and good for tenth all time.
Ruby Lindquist followed up her mile and took seventh in 2:22.67.
In the sprints,
Breanne Fuller took fourth in 200 dash with a personal best of 25.30. That time is #2 all time.
Zoe Langseth finally cracked the minute barrier in the 400m running 59.27 which is sixth all time. She took 8
th in the meet.
Mikayla Tracy ran an impressive 60.08 to take 11
th. She would've been number ten all time had Langseth not set her new personal best.
The 4x400 of
Mikayla Tracy, Taylor Lindquist,
Samantha Bates, and
Zoe Langseth rounded out the women's squad performances to finish in fifth with a time of 4:03.70. That time is 8
th fastest in school history.
Seth Kovar opened the meet in fashion breaking his own school record in the prelims of the 60m hurdles. He ran 8.28. His school record didn't last long as in finals
Tristan Hepp ran 8.26 to take fourth and set a new school record. Kovar finished 6
th overall.
Taylor Hepp ran 1:22.06 in the 600m dash to take third and move to third in school history. In the 200m,
Tucker Bopp ran 22.86 which ties for tenth in school history. In the 4X 400, Hepp, Hepp,
Brian Kjerstad, and
Tucker Bopp ran 3:21.27 to win the meet. That time is third fastest in school history.
In the field, Hoyt Nicholas took Sixth in weight throw with a toss of 55' – 03"
The Green and Gold return home next weekend for the Stinger Open.
