Led by
Megan Engesser's 25 points, the Yellow Jackets snap their three-game losing streak in Chadron.
In a game which started out slow and was led by defensive rallies the Yellow Jackets and Eagles battled hard for points through the first quarter of play. The Yellow Jackets were able to get on the board first at 8:52 in the first quarter when Engesser dropped a field goal in the paint with an assist from
Niki Van Wyk. With both teams playing stout defense not many more points would get on the board.
The second quarter started at 12-10 in favor of the Eagles; however, the Yellow Jackets offense started to heat up when Engesser dropped back-to-back threes at the end of the quarter allowing the Yellow Jackets to outscore the Eagles 13-10. This gave the Jackets a one-point lead and the momentum headed into the half.
Coming out of the half the Yellow Jackets looked to capitalize on what momentum they had going on a 5-0 run in the first 3 minutes of play. The Jackets stayed in the driver's seat throughout the rest of the quarter outscoring the eagles 21-11 which gave the team a twelve-point lead heading into the final ten minutes of regulation.
That lead would prove to be too much for the Eagles to overcome through the fourth quarter. Offensively the Jackets stayed hot earning another 21 points. However defensively the Jackets allowed the Eagles to score 19 points in a back and forth fourth quarter of play bringing the final score to 65-52 Jackets.
Offensively Engesser led the team earning 25 points, including six 3-pointers, with
Racquel Wientjes close behind scoring 15 points of her own after a slow start to the night. As a team the Yellow Jackets shot 37.7% (20-of-53) from the field and 30.8% (8-of-26) from beyond the arc. At the charity stripe the Jackets shot 17-of-24 (70.8%).
Defensively, Engesser and Wientjes each pulled in seven boards while
Katie Messler recorded a career tying 4 steals with
Morgan Ham,
Ashley Davis, and Wientjes all following close behind with 3 steals apiece.
