Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yellow Jackets Rout Colorado School of Mines in OT Victory

The Yellow Jackets had everyone on the edge of their seats Monday night in an exciting and intense overtime win over the Orediggers.

Coming into the night both teams boasted impressive one loss records with the Yellow Jackets holding a 5-1 record and the Orediggers holding a 3-1 record in the RMAC. The Orediggers jumped out to an early lead which they maintained throughout much of the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets hit a groove in the second quarter completing 69.2% of their shots and scoring 23 points compared to the Orediggers 7 points. Morgan Ham led the scoring charge in the second quarter scoring 10 points followed by Racquel Wientjes and Megan Engesser who recorded 5 points each. This gave the Yellow Jackets a sizable 15-point lead heading into halftime.

However, a lull in scoring for the Yellow Jackets in the 2nd half led to an exciting overtime finish. After only scoring 23 points throughout the duration of the second half the Yellow Jackets found themselves tied with the Orediggers 62-62 at the end of regulation.

Overtime turned in the favor of the Jackets with a perfectly timed steal by Megan Engesser to start play and perfect shooting by both Ashlee Beacom (3-of-3) and Niki Van Wyk (2-of-2).

"This team has a ton of fight," said head coach Mark Nore. "It was them tonight really. The team persevered and found a way to beat a really good team."

As a team the Yellow Jackets shot 21-of-49 (42.9%) from the field and 8-of-20 (40%) from beyond the arc. The team got it done at the free throw line shooting 23-of-26 (88.5%). The team had three double digit scorers on the night with Morgan Ham leading the way with 20 points and Megan Engesser close behind with 15 points of her own. Rounding out double digit scoring for the Yellow Jackets was Racquel Wientjes who had 13 total points. While she was a little quieter on offense Wientjes was a defensive leader pulling down four defensive rebounds and sneaking four steals.

Another highlight of the night was Morgan Ham recording her career 1,000th point late in the fourth quarter tying the game at 62.
