DURANGO, COLO.- Black Hills State University women's volleyball records second victory of the day with 3-2 win over Westminster.
Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets were juniors
Sierra Ward and
Madison Hoopman who each recorded double digit kills with 14 and 15, respectively. Four Jackets were able to record aces in the match-up with
Kindra Cerrone recording three, Katherine Welniak and
Peyton Bodemann each recording two, and
Haedyn Rhoades sinking one ace on the night.
The first set started out slow for the Yellow Jackets who had already played four sets on the day with Westminster pulling ahead by two to start the set. The Griffins would go on to lead by as much as 12 points in the set as they took a 5-17 lead. The Jackets would rally back diligently but would ultimately not be able to overcome the 12-point deficit falling to the Griffins 17-25.
To open the second set the Jackets and Griffins would trade points back and forth until tied at 6-6 at which point the Griffins would score five points to the Jackets one. The Griffins would go ahead to put a few more scoring runs together to put the set out of the Yellow Jackets reach. The Jackets would fall in set two 20-25.
Down 2-0 the Jackets were looking to change the momentum in the third set of the match. Hoopman, Cerrone, and Ward would be the leaders in the momentum change with Ward recording five kills and Hoopman and Cerrone recording three apiece. The Griffins struggled to come up with a response when the front three got hot with their blocks which led the Yellow Jackets to a 25-20 victory.
The momentum would stay with the Yellow Jackets into the fourth set as the team traded points with the Griffins before going on runs of three, four, and eight. To set the score at 19-10 in favor of the Jackets. The nine-point deficit would prove to be too much for the Griffins to overcome and the Jackets take the victory 25-13 setting the scene for a match deciding fifth set.
The Jackets would open the final set with an attack error that would be easily forgotten after the Jackets answer the error scoring three straight points.
Peyton Bodemann would go on a service run putting her team up 8-3 early in the match and putting the griffins on the defensive early in the set. After trading points
Katelyn Sylvester would go on a service run of her own giving the Jackets another four points before Katherine Welniak would come in the close out the set (15-7) and the match (3-2) in favor of the Jackets.
