Yellow Jackets Split Matches in Day Two of Competition

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Yellow Jackets split their matches in day two of the Yellow Jacket Invitational falling to Saint Martin's 3-2 and defeating Bemidji in straight sets.

Junior outside hitter Madison Hoopman was named to the All-Tournament team after racking up 44 kills, 28 digs, three blocks, and 48.5 points in 16 sets played at the Yellowjacket invitational.

Madison Hoopman led the Yellow Jackets with eight kills.

Emma Desanti led the team in assists with 16.

Haedyn Rhoades recorded 24 digs.

While Desanti dropped three aces, Kindra Cerrone and Peyton Bodemann sunk two, and Karly Marx, Rhoades, and Hoopman had one apiece.

In their first contest of day two at the Yellowjacket Invitation presented by Hilton Garden Inn the Yellow Jackets fell in five sets to Saint Martin winning set one 26-24, winning set two 25-23, losing set three 12-25, losing set four 18-25, and losing set five 7-15.

In set one Saint Martin got off to an early lead going up 3-0 over the Yellow Jackets before BHSU was able to pull even at five all. The set would be tied up again at eight all before the Yellow Jackets would go on a run outscoring the Saints 4-9 to bring the score to 12-17. Although the Saints would get close, they would not be able to tie or take the lead for the remainder of the match falling to the Yellow Jackets 26-24.

BHSU would take the early lead over the Saints in set two of the match going up 8-4. The Saints would keep scoring close bringing the game within one point at 23-24 before the Yellow Jackets would seal the set two victory with a block by Mariah Robinson.

The BHSU offense would slow down in the third set as the Yellow Jackets would struggle to find their groove from the first two sets. SMU would take the lead 4-3 and not look back going up by as much as 13 points in route to a 25-12 victory over the Yellow Jackets.

Set four saw the Yellow Jackets struggle with attacks earning errors on four straight attacks. Although rallying back at the end of the set after falling behind 20-10 the ten-point deficit would prove to be too difficult to overcome for the Yellow Jackets as they would fall 25-18 to the Saints tying the match at two all.

Set four started close through opening points before the Saints would go on a seven-point run setting the score at 9-2. The seven-point run would put BHSU with too much ground to make up in a fifteen-point set as the Yellow Jackets would fall 15-7 losing the set and match to the Saints.

In their second contest of the game the Yellow Jackets defeated the Beavers in straight sets winning 25-16, 25-12, and 25-19.

Madison Hoopman led the team with 13 kills.

Karly Marx was the assist leader for BHSU with 32.

Haedyn Rhoades recorded 13 digs and six aces.

Kindra Cerrone was the only other Yellow Jacket to record an ace in the match with one.

Set one saw the Yellow Jackets and Beavers battle trading points back and forth until the Yellow Jackets were able to open the scoring taking a four-point lead 8-4 over the Beavers. Bemidji State would rally back pulling within one at 11-10. Behind kills from three Yellow Jackets BHSU would pull ahead again before Haedyn Rhoades would stomp on the gas sinking four straight aces to put the game out of reach for the Beavers. The Yellow Jackets would go on to win 25-16.

BHSU pulled ahead early in the second set building on their momentum from the first set going up 10-4 over the Beavers. The Yellow Jackets would not let up from that point going on an 11-3 run bringing the score to 21-8 in favor of BHSU. Bemidji would tack a few more points on but ultimately the Yellow Jackets would take the set two victory 25-12 going up 2-0 in sets over the Beavers.

Set three got off to a slow start for the Yellow Jackets with the Beavers taking an early lead 2-0 before the Yellow Jackets would pull it even at two all. The Beavers would then outscore the Yellow Jackets 8-3 taking a 10-5 lead before the Yellow Jackets would come rolling back taking an 18-13 lead over the Beavers. Ultimately that lead would be too much for the Beavers to overcome as BHSU would take the match victory in straight sets defeating the Beavers 25-19.
