Yellow Jacket Ladies Play Tough in Loss to Thunderwolves

Black Hills State volleyball hosted their last home game of the 2022 season on Saturday evening, with BHSU dropping the match to (RV) CSU Pueblo 3-0.

Despite the loss, Aiyana Byrd held a strong performance against the Thunderwolves as she recorded 9.5 points on 7 kills, a service ace, a block solo, and an assisted block. She finished the match with a team leading .500 clip.

Karly Marx held 19 of 22 total assists for the Yellow Jackets tonight while also claiming a pair of kills and two block assists. Haedyn Rhoades led the team with 10 digs on the night, with Erin Weibel following behind with eight of her own versus CSUP. Casey Widdoss led the team with three block assists on her stat line.

Set One (L, 25-11): The Yellow Jackets started the first six serves strong, staying in contention with the Thunderwolves at a 3-3 scoreboard before CSUP charged to a 13-5 lead. BHSU did not stand down, recording a 5-1 series that included two blocks and three kills, but the Thunderwolves regained their rhythm and took the set win after an 11-1 push retired set one.

Set Two (L, 25-13): BHSU jumped out in front following an Abigail Renner-Widdoss block put them up 2-0, but CSUP regained the lead on four straight scores. The Yellow Jackets continued to fight, but the Thunderwolves held enough pressure on the Yellow Jackets to slowly separate themselves and ended up at a 22-11 lead.

Hoopman put up another pair of kills to try and rally the team back, but CSUP continued to play tough offense and secure the second set victory.

Set Three (L, 25-15): Continuing to showcase their grit, the Yellow Jackets took a 4-2 lead from a Kindra Cerrone service ace and a solo block from Byrd. BHSU held the lead for four more serves until the Thunderwolves put up an eight-score series to go up 12-6.

Marx, Widdoss, and Hoopman put up points for the Yellow Jackets in attempt to tie the set back up, but the Thunderwolves stirred up another four-score push to expand to a 17-9 lead. BHSU kept trying to set up momentum on offense, but CSUP went on to finish the third set with a 10-point lead.
