Volleyball Drops Match Against Mavericks

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State volleyball fell to the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Friday night in three straight sets.
 
Abigail Renner and Kindra Cerrone led the Yellow Jacket attack as both athletes held six kills on the night. Renner carried a .375 hitting efficiency while Cerrone carried a .286 on the night. Haedyn Rhoades recorded another 14 digs tonight as well as a pair of aces, while Karly Marx and Hannah Lamon split the team assists in tonight's matchup (Marx had 11, Lamon had nine). Cerrone led the team in blocks with a pair of blocking assists, with Aiyana Byrd and Mariah Robinson each recording one versus CMU.
 
Set One (L, 25-16): CMU quickly jumped to a 4-1 lead over the Yellow Jackets to start the match and were able to maintain a four-point gap at the least. BHSU secured a three-score series later in the first set led to a 14-11 scoreboard, but the Mavericks were quick to respond put up a four-point scoring series of their own. From this point, CMU controlled the rest of the set and secured the win over BHSU.
 
Set Two (L, 25-9): The Yellow Jackets put up a competitive start to the set that saw a 5-4 score before the Mavericks recorded a 9-1 series on BHSU to go up 14-5. CMU went on to outscore the Yellow Jackets 11-4 to take the second set.
 
Set Three (L, 25-12): The Mavericks started with a 6-0 lead before a Robinson kill put up the first points of the set for the Yellow Jackets. After a 12-5 series in favor of Colo. Mesa, BHSU recorded a four-point series off a pair of Maverick errors and a pair of service aces from Rhoades. CMU matched the scores off Yellow Jacket errors and a service ace to go up 21-10, with the Yellow Jackets only securing two more points before CMU put the match away.
