Softball Drops Saturday Doubleheader to CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – Black Hills State softball lost its Saturday doubleheader against CSU Pueblo, 8-0 and 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets (8-15, 6-15 RMAC) found runs hard to come by, but still totaled 12 hits on the day.

Game One (L, 8-0)
Lizzy Johnson led the game off with a single through the right side, but it was all CSU Pueblo after that as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings of play.

The Thunderwolves added two in the third and one more in the fourth to extend to a 6-0 lead.

Johnson tallied her second hit of the game in the fifth, recording both Yellow Jacket hits in the game, but the team would eventually fall, 8-0.

Game Two (L, 3-2)
Game two was a pitcher's dual, as both teams remained scoreless through five innings. Shayla Tuschen looked strong in the circle, striking out four over her five scoreless innings of work.

The Yellow Jackets threatened in the top of the sixth when leadoff singles from Hailey Franklin and Tyler Whitlock were later followed by a two-out walk from Bell Luebken to load the bases.

Crystal Amaral came up next and poked an RBI single through the left side, driving in the game's first run to give BHSU the 1-0 lead.

CSUP answered in the bottom half of the sixth, though, tying the game at 1-1 entering the seventh.

After a scoreless top of the seventh, Tuschen went back out in the bottom half and sent CSUP down 1-2-3 to send the game to extra innings. She would eventually retire seven straight Thunderwolves, sending them down in order again in the eighth to move to the ninth inning.

BHSU put two on in the ninth with singles from Tuschen and MiKayla Johnson, but were held scoreless. Tuschen would go back to work in the circle to face the minimum in the ninth and extend her stretch to ten straight Thunderwolves retired.

In the top of the 11th, MiKayla Johnson put the Yellow Jackets ahead 2-1 with an RBI single to plate Amaral.

After Tuschen had retired 13 straight batters, CSU Pueblo took advantage of a BHSU error to even the score at 2-2, before a walk-off single ended the game with the Thunderwolves winning 3-2.
