PUEBLO, Colo. – Black Hills State softball swept aside CSU Pueblo in its Sunday doubleheader, winning game one 11-2 before completing the sweep in game two, 7-6.
The Yellow Jackets' (10-15, 8-15 RMAC) offense exploded for a total of 18 runs, 19 hits and six extra base hits.
Game One (W, 11-2)
Both teams were held hitless through two innings before BHSU strung together six hits, two walks and a pair of hit batters in the top of the third to put up a 7-spot in the inning.
A two RBI single from
Gianna Haley made it 2-0 before RBI singles from
Shayla Tuschen and
Tyler Whitlock put the Yellow Jackets ahead 7-0 in the middle of the third.
After CSUP got one back in the bottom of the third, Tuschen punched a single out to right center in the top of the fourth to drive in Haley for her second RBI of the game and extend the BHSU lead to 8-1.
Later, up 9-2 in the seventh, Whitlock hit a 2-RBI double out to right to give the Yellow Jackets an 11-2 lead, and the team would eventually win by that score.
Crystal Amaral was excellent in the circle, going all seven innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out six.
Game Two (W, 7-6)
The Yellow Jacket offense kept rolling in game two as the team led off the game with five straight hits.
Singles from
Lizzy Johnson, Haley and
Bell Luebken loaded the bases before Amaral hit a single of her own to drive in two and then a Tuschen 3-run blast out to center put BHSU up 5-0 in the first inning.
After a CSUP run in the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets held a 5-1 lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Thunderwolves scored one more.
But BHSU got the run back in the top of the fifth on an
Autumn Porter RBI double to score Amaral and make it a 6-2 ballgame.
The Yellow Jackets added one more in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2.
CSUP threatened as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. They would plate four, but BHSU would hold them there to seal the win, 7-6.
Notes
- BHSU reaches double-figures in the win column for the first time since the 2019 season (13-28), and for the third time since joining NCAA DII ahead of the 2012 season.
