Softball Plays Colorado School of Mines in Gritty Doubleheader

GOLDEN, Colo. – Black Hills State softball traded it's Friday doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines, losing game one 3-4 and winning game two 3-2.

The Yellow Jackets (11-29, 9-29 RMAC) kept both contests close, drawing comebacks late in both games, dropping game one in the seventh inning and winning game two in extra innings.

Game One (L, 3-4)
Inning one only saw two combined hits from both teams, with the first point of the contest being scored by a passed ball in favor of Colorado Mines. The Yellow Jackets first big scoring opportunity came in the second inning in a loaded bases situation after singles from Shayla Tuschen, Tyler Whitlock, and Hailey Franklin; unfortunately, the Orediggers would tack on a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning, leaving the Yellow Jacket ladies with three on base.

Colorado School of Mines would put up another two points in the bottom of the fourth, but Crystal Amaral would bring the Yellow Jackets back into the game in the top of the fifth inning, rocking a three-run homer out to center field to bring the score to 4-3 favoring Colorado Mines.

Going into the top of the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets, down two outs, loaded up second and third base thanks to back-to-back hits from Amaral and Tuschen, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and grounded out to end game one, falling 4-3 to the Orediggers.

Game Two (W, 3-2)
The Orediggers would be the first to strike in the bottom of the second inning, scoring off a wild pitch to start the game ahead 1-0. The game would remain scoreless until the top of the sixth inning.

The Yellow Jackets would tie the game up in the sixth inning, thanks to a single from Marshall and a Tuschen double to right center field leaving the score 1-1. Colorado School of Mines threatened to score at the bottom of the inning as they loaded first and second off a single and a walk, but the Yellow Jackets clamped down and kept them scoreless going into the seventh.

A bunted single from Whitlock and sacrifice hit from Franklin would set up a Lizzie Johnson RBI single out to left field, giving Whitlock the chance to score and give Black Hills State their first lead of the day at 2-1. The Orediggers would notch on two more hits, including an RBI bunt that would tie the game at 2-2, but the Yellow Jackets would hold on and take the game to inning number eight.

Gianna Haley would start the eighth inning fast, nailing a double to left field, which would be followed by an error that would put Amaral on first base. Tuschen would hit an RBI single to right center field, which would lead to Haley securing the score and giving the Yellow Jackets a lead at 3-2 before sides changed. The defense held the Orediggers to zero hits and three consecutive outs, securing the victory in the bottom of the eighth.
